SAM STARS IN HISTORIC WIN

We secured a historic third consecutive promotion with a landslide 135 run victory against Portchester. Bergy won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. Gary and DFS got us off to a steady start and we reached 33 off 11 overs, before DFS departed for 27, when he got a thin edge through to the keeper trying to hook a short ball from S. Kelly.

That brought Bibek to the middle for the first time since he injured his hand on the opening game of the season. Bibek didn’t show any signs of rustiness, as he was soon entertaining us with his full repertoire of shots. A further 28 runs were added, until Gary ran himself out for 16 with the score on 61-2 from 16 overs.

Manny “the run machine” came in at 4 and it was looking ominous for the visitors as the runs were starting to flow. Portchester turned to the gentle left arm around bowling of D. Kelly and it was a shock when Bibek smashed his very first delivery straight to mid-wicket and he had to leave proceedings for a sublime 35.

Sam came in at the unaccustomed position of 5 and for the first time this season he had an opportunity to spend some time in the middle. Sam began by sensibly giving the strike at every opportunity to the free scoring Manny. The pair had put on 86 in 11 overs, when Manny played across the line and missed a straight one to depart for an excellent 70, which included 10 fours and sixes. His innings put him over 500 runs for the season.

Sam was very comfortable out in the middle and was scoring the bulk of his runs off the back foot. Sam punched a couple of boundaries through the covers and he glanced a couple more off his hip to the fine leg boundary. With the 200 secured in the 37th over, Jason was unselfishly giving Sam the strike, so that he could try and bring up his maiden 50 in league cricket.

Sam was facing the last delivery of the innings with 48 against his name. Biggs came in to bowl and drifted a delivery down the legside. Sam glanced the ball towards fine leg and set off for an easy single, with his team mates roaring him onto take an unlikely second, Sam valiantly attempted a second run. However, Thomas gathered the ball cleanly and sent an accurate return right on top of the stumps and the wicket keeper had the simple task of removing the bails. Unfortunately, Sam was well short of his ground and he had to settle for a fine innings of 49 runs. We closed our innings on a brilliant 227-5.

Portchester started their reply in frenetic fashion. They were obviously intimidated by our total and recklessly gifted us 3 wickets in the first 3 overs, with one to Connor and two to Romit. Connor and Romit bowled their allotted overs straight through and Romit added one more wicket to finish with the impressive figures of 3 for 14.

S. Kelly was wielding his 4lb bat with a level of success, until he slogged Bergy to the deep mid-wicket boundary, where Romit took an excellently judged catch. S. Kelly trudged off the pitch for 35 runs. Sam came into the attack with the visitors labouring on 73-5 off 25 overs. Sam accounted for Biggs and Jeal in his 5th and 6th overs respectively to leave Portchester on the brink. Bergy picked up his second wicket before he finished his spell. Manny took over from Bergy to try and take the last two wickets, but it was Sam who took the 9th wicket, when Edgar chipped an easy catch to Jason at point.

With 1 wicket remaining and 5 overs left, Portchester had given up any ambition of playing attacking shots and reverted to blocking almost everything. Their only goal was not to lose all their wickets. They successfully survived the next 4 overs and Bergy sprung a surprise by giving the ball to Bibek to bowl the last over. It almost paid off when Thomas played on and we all jumped in unison as the ball rolled back into the stumps, but agonisingly without enough force to dislodge the bails.

Portchester closed their innings on 92-9 and we had to settle for 23 points. Sam finished with 3-12 from his 7 overs to back up his 49 runs with the bat. Our last game is a highly anticipated encounter against the leaders Solent Rangers. We still have an outside chance of winning the league and we will be giving it our all.

I am extremely proud of our team and it has been a marvellous achievement to secure promotion. This is our third consecutive promotion and everyone who has represented the Mighty Three’s over the last three seasons have all played their part in a magnificent feat. Also, the fantastic Supporters Club have been there to help us with their wonderful encouragement and are an integral part of the team. Well done everyone! Up The Mighty Three’s!!
