Match report PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA 3RD’S V EMSWORTH II

SOUTH EAST DIVISION 1

LANGSTONE SPORTS GROUND

SATURDAY 4TH AUGUST 2018

MANNY AND QASIR BLAZE PATH TO VICTORY

We won the toss and elected to bat first on another baking hot day. We didn’t make the most auspicious start with two wickets falling in the first seven overs to short pitched deliveries. Romit and Manny swung the game in our favour with a stand of 88 for the third wicket, which was broken when Romit departed lbw to Rainbow for an excellent 37.

Qasir joined Manny and they proceeded to take the game away from Emsworth with an explosive partnership of 79 runs from just 9 overs. Qasir run riot and raced to his 50 from just 28 balls, before his exhilarating innings was brought to an end, when Bigwood trapped him lbw. Qasir’s entertaining 64 runs included 8 fours and 4 sixes.

Manny’s fine form this season continued with another half century, before he was caught at backward square leg for a brilliant 72, which was instrumental in us posting a commanding 240-8 from our 40 overs.

It was unlikely that Emsworth were going to chase down the runs and it was just a matter if we could bowl them all out and claim the full 24 points. We didn’t help our quest with seven chances going to ground. Despite this, we still made steady inroads into the Emsworth batting and after 29 overs they were 128-5. The wickets had been shared around with Connor and Romit claiming two each and one to Sam.

Our main obstacle was Lewis the opposing captain. He had opened the innings and had made 85, when we finally got rid of him in the thirty second over. He became Qasir’s third victim with a nick behind to Manny and Emsworth were reduced to 158-8. It only took us another two overs to get the 24 points our performance deserved.

Mohit got himself a wicket with a beautifully flighted leg break delivery that drew Webb forward and found the outside edge, where Manny took a sharp catch to complete a memorable afternoon’s work for him. That was his third catch to go with an earlier stumping off Sam’s bowling to back up his fine 72 with the bat.

It was a special moment that the victory was sealed with a wicket from Khartik, who was returning to action for only his second match of the season after breaking his thumb in three places on the opening game. Rainbow mistimed a drive into the covers and Ollie completed an assured display from himself in the field with a comfortable catch.

It was a vital victory and we gained another imperative 24 points in our pursuit of a top two finish. It was a great response by us after the disappointment of last weeks defeat. Our next hurdle is a fixture away to Follands Hamble and it is crucial that we get another big win to keep the pressure on the top two. Well done lads! Up The Mighty Three’s!! Bring it on!!!
