Southeast Regional 1
Hambledon 3rd’s v Portsmouth & Southsea 3rd’s
Broad Halfpenny Down
Dominant P&S cruise to victory.
We were put into bat on a bright green track that was tailor made for bowling first on with the new ball. Gary and DFS got us off to a solid start in testing weather conditions. A strong breeze was blowing intermittent showers across the ground and after 14 overs the players had to come off when the rain became too heavy.
Gary was unfortunate to be run out for 19, just before the drinks break in the 20th over. At this stage we were comfortably placed at 53-1 and were set up to attack the second part of the innings. Jez looked good in his brief spell at the crease, before he was undone by a looping delivery from Berry that boomed across him with the aid of the blustery wind blowing across the ground. Jez got the faintest of bottom edges to the keeper with an attempted slog sweep shot.
The in- form Manny purposely made his way to the crease and he immediately set about the bowlers. In between the flow of thunderous boundaries flashing from his bat, Manny and DFS run Hambledon ragged with their quick singles. Manny raced to his 50 in only 8 overs and DFS deservedly got his own 50 a few balls later.
Manny was out for 52, when he ambitiously walked down the track to the medium pace of Roger’s and edged an extravagant drive behind to the keeper. Manny’s explosive knock had helped put us in a commanding position at 150-3 with 10 overs remaining.
The situation was perfect for Qaiser to come in and destroy the bowling with one of his dynamic inning’s. He didn’t disappoint with a collection of boundaries that included two of his signature check drives that sailed high and long for two magnificent straight sixes. Qaiser had made a whirlwind 31, before he was bowled by a yorker attempting another majestic straight drive.
Bergy joined DFS with the score on 176-4 in 36th over. Two singles were added, before DFS was finally out, when a ball sneaked between his bat and pad and bowled him for an excellent 61. Neil was next in and there was still work to be done to get to 200 runs and to gain the maximum batting points. We got the 200 via one four and some scampered running between the wickets. We closed our innings on a perfectly paced 203-5 and it was a brilliant effort on such a green wicket.
Connor and Romit opened our bowling and the home side found runs hard to come by. Once again Connor was the pick of our bowlers and he ended his spell of 8 overs with an impressive 3-15. Romit got one wicket himself and with the aid of a run out from Connor, Hambledon had lost 5 wickets after 16 overs.
Sam and Mani came on to operate spin from both ends. They kept it tight and each got a wicket after their 8 over spells. With 8 overs remaining it was down to Qaiser and Manny to get the last 3
wickets. Manny got our 8th wicket in the 36th over, but Shinn was frustrating us with his defensive resolve. Bergy brought himself on to try something different, but we couldn’t get the final 2 wickets our performance deserved. However, we collected 23 points with our comprehensive 48 run victory. We can go into our local derby this Saturday against Portsmouth 3rd team full of confidence after this fine team performance. Great performance lads. Bring on Saturday!
