Match report
Although we were beaten by the better side on the night the result was considerably closer than the headline attests.
Losing the toss we were put in and challenged to decide on what a good score was. With the pitch, having been used twice before, was turning square from one end and tricky at the other. With 4 tidy spinners operating we tried too hard and had to rely on Ben and Jack to rebuild which they did well. When we lost both in quick succession Mani played a good hand hitting his first ball for our 3rd and final 4 of the evening. Some naïve running saw us lose 4 wickets to run outs and closing on 109 we felt we were perhaps 15 short.
To win we need to take everything that came our way. Unfortunately, within the first 2 overs, we had let a stumping and catch go begging, one from each end and for each bat. Neither were sitters but you'd hope to take them more often than not. While Ben's probing and miserly spell returned the best figures, all the lads bowled gamely. Therefore despite not taking wickets we were never really out of it until the coup de grace came 8 balls from home. They needed 15 off the last thee overs and with their champion bat just retired, a wicket would have made it interesting. However a couple of effective, if not pretty swings, from the number 3 and a rare false shot (inside edge for 4) from the opener, hurried them to their deserved win.
While our record of played 5 won 1 isn't great, we won 1 of the 2 matches we chased in and almost hung on to results we shouldn't have got near winning. All bar one game went into the last couple of overs. Our young side will learn how to go about managing innings better to set and chase totals and (with the exception of Ben and George) will be back to challenge another year older and another year wiser.
Our thanks to our 2 "retiring" senior pros who leave age group cricket this term. Well done both.
