Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI v Purbrook III on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 2.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report P&S Development side continued their good form with a hard-fought victory over neighbours Purbrook 3's.

With the Farlington pitch unavailable, and Purbrook 1s playing on the next-door St John's pitch, both sides made the trek up to Easebourne to find a quick outfield but poorly conditioned strip. P&S were forced into 4 changes from last week with Mr Chisholm making a rare appearance and Harrison Robbins making his senior debut. After winning the toss, the 'home' side chose to field first. This looked like a good decision initially, as Purbrook were reduced to 63 for 7. Mo Malik's direct hit ran out big-hitting opener Cornborough, before Mengham was clean bowled by a rare decent ball from the skipper. At the other end, Mo was bowling much tidier, finding the odd bit of bounce which eventually did for Marsh, the thin edge superbly grasped by Tristan Collighan, standing up at the stumps. The Chairman then took two catches at mid-wicket from a couple of poor pull shots, firstly off Sanson then Mani Noor Spencer. Tristan then took another sharp catch before Harrison took his first senior wicket, clean bowling Harris, and the visitors were in trouble. However, Taylor and McGlinchy put on a hundred with some expansive hitting and a fair degree of luck, both being put down several times with catches of varying difficulty. Mo came back on and Taylor slapped a straightforward chance to the skipper at mid-off, but no 10 Lister added another 21 as Purbrook surged past 200. A smart stumping by Tristan took care of Lister, and McGlinchy fell to the same fate in the last over as he desperately pushed for his hundred, leaving Purbrook all out for 214.

P&S started like a train, Sean Kanavan and Simon Smith putting on 32 in the first 4 overs before Sean was caught late-cutting at deep backward point. Ollie went in to join his dad and steadied the ship, holding an end while the usually conservative Simon kept the run rate ticking over nicely with some glorious shots. Ollie batted 12 overs, gaining him some much-needed time in the middle, before being caught at square leg. After Neil and Sonny were both out cheaply, Tristan came in with the chase looking difficult at 95 for 4. But a superb partnership with Simon saw the pair bat 16 overs together for 90 runs as the hosts closed in on victory. 34 was needed from the last 5, and as Simon pushed for runs, was LBW to Taylor for a superb 98. Purbrook brought back opener Lister to bowl down the slope, but Chis was unfazed and clipped him for 4 to fine leg. Tristan finally succumbed chasing runs in the 40th over for an excellent 30, before Mani selflessly ran himself out to get Chis on strike. Needing 3 to win from 3 balls, Wright drifted on to the Chairman's pads and was clipped away fine for another boundary, and an excellent chase was complete.

By far the biggest chase we have had to date, and a great mix of experience and youth got us through. Top stuff all round (though we may do some catching practice before next week...!)

MOM: Simon's innings was superb, but for a mature knock and some great keeping Man of the match is Tristan, well done no6!
