Bishops Waltham IV v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 2.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 41 runs
Match report
The development squad continued their good form with a well-earned away win at the Holt.
After being put into bat on a damp, lifeless wicket, the visitors lost Tristan Collighan in the second over as the ball checked on an attempted sweep. Sean Kanavan wasted no time in setting about the bowling, dispatching both openers for 4 and 6 respectively, before another delivery checked on him, pinning him LBW. Tristan Nay, on his debut, then batted beautifully with Ollie Smith ably assisting at the other end. But when Ollie was c&b it brought about a collapse as the skipper(0) and then Nay(19) were dismissed, leaving the visitors struggling on 42 for 5. Up stepped 12 year old Joel and 15 year old Mo, both batting with maturity and patience beyond their years as they added 63 before Joel was unlucky to smash a pull shot straight into the midriff of short square leg for 25. Again this set about a mini collapse as Mo (23), then Mani and Sonny all fell quickly, leaving us floundering again at 125 for 9. This time the adults helped us regroup, John Eastment (25) and Giles Collighan (35) batting superbly and running everything available to take us to a decent 173/9off our 42 overs.
The host's innings mirrored ours in many ways: after Mo had both openers caught, Windebank and skipper Dave Rudling got Waltham to 42 before the former was well caught by Collighan up at the stumps from an edge off Joel. The youngster had another soon after as he clean bowled Dilley for 1, and the hosts were reeling at 45 for 4 and behind the run rate, with Mani bowling with superb economy. Rudling was joined by the miserable Livermore and they slowly began to recover, before a poor short ball from the skipper was met by an equally poor straight hit from his opposite number, and Sean ran round to take a good catch. With Mani finishing his spell, John came on and took two quick wickets including trapping Livermore Lbw for 19, before good fielding by Mani ran out Murphy. The hosts were struggling on 102/8 and a P&S win looked certain, but again the tail wagged and some firm hitting from the two colts in the Waltham team, along with a couple of missed opportunities, looked like it may cost the visitors a bowling point. However, Waltham couldn't hold out, and when the skipper took a decent low catch off a straight drive with just 9 balls to go, Mo finished it off with the very next delivery, pinning Farley Lbw and leaving himself a hat-trick ball next week...
Another good team performance on a tricky wicket, and the first time we have defended a score. Well done to all involved.
MOM: With 60 runs, 6 wickets and only 27 years between them it was the Mo and Joel show, and too close to call, so both are MOM, great stuff lads
