Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI v Fareham & Crofton IV on Sat 06 May 2017 at 2.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won By 7 wkts

Match report The development team made a great start to their season with a convincing win over Fareham 4's.

Despite having to draft in a couple of lads from the under 13's, P&S bowled out the visitors for 118 before comfortably knocking off the total with 7 overs to spare.

After choosing to bat, Fareham started slowly but without loss. They began to find their feet a little more but the opening bowlers did a good job restricting them, despite a tricky wind coming directly across the square. A change of bowling did the trick as Joel Eastment, at just 12 years old, took his first senior wicket as a thin bottom edge was superbly taken by 'keeper Tristan Collighan standing up at the stumps. The same pair were to combine again for the second wicket, before Eastment had Whittle caught by Sonny Brooks at point for an industrious 41. This started a collapse as Brooks got in on the act himself, firstly having Reynolds caught with a sharp one-handed catch by the skipper in close, then completing a double-wicket maiden. Mo Malik got his deserved wicket, coming back for his second spell to trap Lavery LBW, before Eastment got his fourth. The skipper also came back on to clean the tail up, bowling his opposite number to leave the visitors all out for 118.

The Smiths opened up for P&S, Ollie playing a lovely drive for 4 before missing a straight one. Simon was his usual steady self, patiently chipping away but taking no risks. Tristan batted nicely but was unlucky to be undone by a ball that checked on the pitch and was gloved up to slip, and the captain did similar, getting through a shot to early and chipping to cover. That brought Brooks to the crease, with a career high score of 12, but he batted superbly alongside the calming influence of Smith snr, who reached his 50 just before Brooks hit the winning runs with a crashing four through mid-wicket.

As first games go, it couldn't have gone much better; there will be tougher games ahead, but when the opposition skipper heaps praise on your colts, it shows what a good position the team, and the club, are in. Well done lads.

MOM - several contenders but with figures of 5-2-9-3 and 25 not out it goes to Sonny Brooks. :)
