Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 3rd XI v Burridge III on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 2.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 35 runs
Match report
PORTSMOUTH AND SOUTHSEA 3RD’S V BURRIDGE 3RD’S
SATURDAY 1ST JULY 2017
LANGSTONE SAILING CENTRE
BURRIDGE MAULED BY MUTHURAMAN
We won the toss and choose to bat on a hot and sunny day. Doug and Jason made a solid start by putting on 73 for the first wicket. Doug departed in the 19th over for an impressive 39, which included six fours and one six. Jason followed in the next over and at drinks we were 80-2.
The good work was not built upon when Bibek and Bergy got themselves out after both making starts. Khartik continued the trend when he departed for 15, which ended a partnership of 46 runs with Qaisir. At 35 overs we were interestingly placed at 152-5. That became 152-7 in the next over when Shipley removed the destructive Qaisir for a rapid 29 and Sathish for 6, in a double wicket maiden in the 36th over.
A realistic target now for us was to reach 175 with only fours overs remaining and the the tail to get us there. Sam came very close to achieving it for us with a lusty blow from the last ball of the innings, but he was caught at cow corner. We closed on 172-9.
Khartik and Bergy opened the bowling and Khartik struck in his first over. Sam took a smart catch at first slip and Attrill was on his way back for a duck. Khartik was in the mood and Beavis was next when he was bowled by a quick inswinger for 2. Khartik smelt blood and like a pack of sharks during a feeding frenzy he ripped into another batsman of Burridge’s top order. This time it was White who walked off confused, after he left a vicious inswinger, only to have his off stump smashed back.
Sam replaced the Skipper at the Kendell end and induced Thomas to drive straight to Bergy at mid off, from the last ball of his first over. Khartik continued his one man demolition act with another wicket in his fourth over. Friend became his fourth victim, when he was bowled by Khartik. Burridge where in a total mess at 20-5 from 10 overs and Khartik had four wickets from five overs for three runs!
Burridge finally cleared their heads and started to consolidate their innings. A stand of 46 from 17 overs offered some normality to proceedings. During that time Khartik’s brilliant spell came to an end and he finished with the remarkable figures of 4-14 from his 10 overs.
Pete broke the stand when Khartik took a catch at mid-wicket to remove Shipley for 28. Another stand of 52 for the 7th wicket made the scorecard more respectable. It was Qaisir who broke it when he bowled O Holroyd-Pearce for 39 in the 36th over. That name could come in handy for our next cracker challenge in the changing room.
Bergy replaced Pete and took the final three wickets after changing to seam up from his off spin. Burridge were dismissed for 137 and we collected 22 points from our 35 run victory.
It was an impressive response to our defeat last Saturday and once again it proved the character of the team. The league is wide open with every team showing a trace of vulnerability. Curdridge’s defeat against a dangerous Locks Heath side has provided further evidence of this fact.
Well done lads on another tremendous performance and roll on this Saturday for our next game against Fair Oak. Bring it on!
I would like to thank everyone for their birthday wishes and the presents I received. Thank you all for your thoughtfulness and by making it a special day for me.
