Match report
PORTSMOUTH AND SOUTHSEA 3RD’S V OLD NETLEY AND HIGHFIELD 3RD’S
24TH JUNE 2017
HEDGE END
We won the toss and elected to bat on a soft and green council track. The conditions were humid and the skies overhead were heavy with grey clouds, but the Skipper was still confident that we could get over 200 runs and thus gain maximum batting points.
Ben and Qaisir opened up together for the first time. Ben saw off the first over and then Qaisir immediately set about the other opening bowler. The first ball was a dot, but the next three deliveries raced to the boundary. Qaisir rocked back and pulled the second and third deliveries to the square leg boundary. The next ball was a fuller length and sailed over mid-off for a massive six.
The ball was swinging prodigiously, which made Qaisirs exploits even more sensational. Ben was battling bravely, but was beaten by a full length swinging delivery from Atkins. Qaisir crashed two more fours before his audacious innings ended for 22, when he nicked one behind off Atkins.
Bibek and the Skipper came together in the sixth over and we were 24-2. The ball was seaming and swinging alarmingly and the pair tried valiantly to see off the opening bowlers. However, on this occasion they came up second best. Bergy was the first to depart when he was bowled by an in-swinger from Harrington for 4. Bibek was soon to follow, when he was bowled by an in-swinging Yorker from Atkins for 7.
Khartik and Sathish now had the task of trying to repair our inning’s. After 12 overs the Netley Skipper surprisingly took off the opening bowlers. They took our total up to 50-4, but just when Khartik was starting to move through the gears, he was bowled for 15 by Lbaoum.
Tom joined the fray and was at his obdurate best as he put on 44 with the free scoring Sathish, before he offered a simple caught and bowled to Lbaoum. Gous was next in and he provided support to Sathish for several overs. On the back of 24 consecutive dot balls, Sathish tried going over the top of the field and was caught at mid-off. His brilliant innings of 37 offered us a chink of light and it took us up to 108-7 off 27 overs.
With Sam making his way to the middle our objective was all about batting our allotted overs. Sam went about his task confidently and was resolute in his defence. Also, he was quick to seize on anything short or wide and crashed several fours. Unfortunately, he was bowled for 24 by the returning Harrington and we were all out for 148 from 38.2 overs.
We opened our bowling with Khartik and Sathish, but the attack soon changed with Netley charging to 27-0 from 3 overs. Qaisir took a wicket in his first over when he trapped Harrington lbw for 16. Sam was operating from the opposite end and Netley were reduced to 87-2, when Sam bowled Atkins for 23 in the 11th over. Pete had replaced Qaisir with the Skipper choosing to take the pace off the ball.
With the score on 123-2, Bergy took over from Sam for a last roll of the dice. In the 21st over Bergy bowled Clarke for 55. Pete and Bergy were starting to build some pressure and our hopes of an unlikely victory were boosted when Pete found himself on a hat-trick. Netley were starting to wobble at 136-5. The field had closed in with us making every effort to produce something remarkable. However, it wasn’t to be as Netley scrambled over the line without losing anymore
wickets. Netley’s victory was chiefly down to the excellent bowling of Atkins and Harrington, who proved to be too good for us on the day.
Once again availabilities played a big part in our downfall. We must pick ourselves up and move on to our next game against Burridge 3rd’s. Keep going lads there is still a long way to go.
