SATURDAY 3RD JUNE 2017
“WE’VE GOT QAISIR BABY,
WE’VE GOT QAISIR OHHHH”
It was vital to our season that we bounced back after our last 2 matches. We lost the toss and the opposing skipper put us in on a warm sunny day.
The returning Ben Miles and Khartik Madavan opened and got us off to the perfect start. They put on 75, before Ben was trapped LBW for a solid 22 in the 20th over.
Soon after, Khartik recorded his first 50 for the club and looked well set to go on and get a big score. As always it was a surprise when he lost his wicket. He departed for an excellent 54 and with Dinesh already out for 6, we had to start again with two new batsmen at the crease.
Bibek and the skipper had the task of rebuilding the innings and they were looking comfortable until Bibek was bowled by the off spin of Archer. That brought the dynamic Qaisir to the crease who took the match away from Gosport in explosive fashion. He destroyed their bowling in a devastating display of belligerent power hitting that sent the ball rocketing to all parts of the ground. Qaisir seized on anything remotely short of a length and pulled the ball in a flash with perfect poise and dispatched it into the boundary with frightening power.
Anything on a good length was met with Qaisir dancing down the track and sending the ball disdainfully back over the bowler’s head for yet another boundary.
It was one of the most destructive innings I have seen in club cricket and his arsenal of shots included several thunderous cover drives. He made a super charged 62, before Archer bowled him, whilst attempting yet another spectacular shot. Qaisir scored 9 fours and 2 sixes off no more than 25 balls. As a result of his exploits and with the support from the remainder of the lower middle order we put on 110 off the last 9 overs to close our innings on an imposing 228.
The skipper and Qaisir opened our bowling, and Qaisir was soon tearing into the opposition again. He took the first 4 wickets with his fast seam up with three of the batsman falling to vicious inswinging Yorkers. He finished his spell with 4-28 from 10 overs.
In between, Sam picked up the wicket of Heath and was desperately unlucky to finish up with only 1 wicket. He had three very difficult chances dropped and on another day, he could easily have got 4 wickets.
Doug replaced Qaisir and kept the pressure up by bowling a probing line with good pace. The deceptive Pete replaced Sam and skittled the last 5 batsmen. He was aided by some excellent catches and with only 7 balls remaining, Khartik Madavan, who replaced the injured Tom Collett took a brilliant stumping to ensure we picked up maximum points. Pete finished with the impressive figures of 5-26 off 6.5 overs. Gosport were all out for 143 and we won by a comfortable 85 runs.
It was a brilliant performance by everyone and by having wickets in hand it allowed the mercurial Qaisir to do what he does best – destroy!
Now we move onto our biggest game of the season and I can’t wait to set about the high flying Hambledon and to show them how we do it in the Three’s. Bring it on!
MAN OF THE MATCH: QAISIR NAVEED for his all-round dynamic display.
CHAMPAGNE MOMENT: PETE NORTHEAST for taking the last wicket with only 7 balls left.
