Match report
PORTSMOUTH AND SOUTHSEA 3RDS V GOSPORT CHALLENGERS
SATURDAY 13TH MAY AT PRIVETT PARK GOSPORT
We won the toss and batted first on a typically prepared council track. Bergy and Kartik Madavan opened and the Skipper was soon trudging back to the pavilion, clean bowled for only 3 runs. Sathish came in at 3 and set about the task in his usual extravagant fashion. After 9 overs we had raced to 48. Then in the 10th over Kartik Madavan looped a catch to mid wicket with a leading edge and he was gone for a sublime 20. Disaster struck when we lost another key wicket with Bibek out for 2, steering a low catch to backward point. Kartik our talisman was next in and with Sathish they began to rebuild our innings.
At drinks, we were 88-3 and in a reasonable position to reach our objective of 200. Unfortunately, the wheels came off in the next two overs. Firstly, Sathish top edged a catch to mid-wicket second ball after drinks for a flamboyant 24 and then Kartik punched a catch to long off for a well-made 26, which included one massive 6.
We had slumped to 94-5 and it fell to Qaisir and Connor to try and give our bowlers a total to bowl at. Our innings looked to be in disarray when they were both out for 1 and we were 102-7 in the 25th over. The new objective was to survive and bat the 42 overs.
Dinesh and Tom looked comfortable and were digging in well until Dinesh was stumped for 10 in the 31st over. Sai took up the challenge and did a magnificent job, before being run out for 12 in the 40th over. Pete joined Tom and a scrambled single brought an over throw which took us to 150. Tom was finally bowled in the last over for a gutsy 18. Tom was in for 11 overs and with the rest of the tail they had battled their way to add a further 50 vital runs.
We felt confident defending 152 and we became buoyant when Kartik Madavan took an outstanding low catch at first slip from the 2nd ball of the innings to give Kartik his first scalp.
Connor and Kartik were bowling well, but no more wickets fell until the 14th over when the number three snicked one to Tom off Connor. He finished his spell with impressive figures of 1-18 . The game was finely balanced with our opponents 43-2 from 14 overs. Unfortunately, Challengers number 4 blasted the game away from us and destroyed our bowling attack. No bowler was spared from his brutal assault as he raced to 50.
Kartik returned to finally remove the remaining opener. He played a Chinese cut once too often and brought his ugly innings to an end. He somehow managed to scoop and shuffle his way to 50. All that was left was to try and pick up some bonus points. Sai with his maiden wicket for the club, which was caught by the irrepressible Kartik at long off got us another bowling point, before Kartik got his third and our final wicket of the match. Challengers got over the line for the loss of 5 wickets. Not having Ben and Sam proved to be crucial for this match.
Despite the defeat, I was very proud of our team for never giving up. Tom and the lower order were magnificent and we continued to fight to the very last ball in the field and in doing so picked up another bowling point. We must take the positives and move on to our next game. We have a lot to be optimistic about and I remain very enthusiastic about our prospects for the season. Keep going lads.
