Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 115 runs

Match report PORTSMOUTH AND SOUTHSEA III V GOSPORT IV
SATURDAY 27TH AUGUST 2016

This is a day to remember, as we secured promotion with an emphatic victory of 115 runs against Gosport IV. It was not all plain sailing as we struggled early on against some slow bowling, which was being held up by a strong wind whipping off the creek.
Simon, DFS and Ramesh all made starts before getting out in the teens. The Skipper fell cheaply and it was down to Bibek and Karthik to rescue the situation. Bibek was playing strictly against his specialist’s advice after recently undergoing shoulder surgery to help boost our numbers and he was further hampered when he suffered a recurring hamstring injury. Despite this he still crafted a gutsy 30, which provided some backbone to our faltering innings.
Karthik came in at 6 and changed the game completely. He began in a circumspect fashion in his determination to play a big innings for the team and then moved through the gears until he was tearing Gosport IV attack to pieces. The King of the sixes was in full swing and the ball was flying all around the ground. It was an innings of critical importance when our season was on a knife edge. By the time he holed out for a majestic 62, he had put the game firmly in our control and Karthik has proven to be our talisman.
Ollie Smith played a massive part in a fantastic partnership with Karthik. Ollie played with great maturity and kept rotating the strike and looked in complete control. When Karthik departed, Ollie began to play more expansively and hit some tremendous shots down the ground.
Ben Saunders entered the fray and treated us to an exhilarating exhibition of powerful drives down the ground. He smashed 19 from just 6 balls, with a four over extra cover, that was executed inside out, the pick of some dazzling shots. Unfortunately, his entertaining cameo came to an end when he timed a clip off his legs that whistled straight to deep mid-wicket.
Tom carried on the assault in his own inimitable style and raced to 17 not out with Ollie unbeaten on 24 at the close of our innings. We posted 213-8 which looked unlikely when we were 60-4. It was a brilliant recovery which highlighted the character of our team.

Connor and Karthik opened the bowling and Gosport were never in it. They decided very quickly to dig in and made no effort to chase down the runs against our excellent bowling attack. Karthik finished with 3-18 and Connor picked up a caught and bowled. Ramesh bowled the ball of the day when he gated their number 4 and the Skipper finished with 3-28. DFS got the ninth wicket with Tom taking another catch behind the stumps.
With just 4 overs remaining and promotion secured the bowlers were running into 7 slips and two gulley’s. The light humour was a prelude for the celebrations that were about to start when the game was over. Unfortunately, we could not get the remaining wicket, but it was irrelevant. The 23 points were enough to guarantee us second place and the promotion we richly deserve for our outstanding performances this season.

It has been an incredible season. I have never played in a team which has been full of so many outstanding characters and I love the eclectic mix of our side. It has been an honour and a privilege to be your Skipper and this team has given me so much enjoyment and a multitude of wonderful memories. I am extremely proud of everyone that has played for our team this season. Well done lads. We did it!
