P&S III V BISHOPS WALTHAM
MATCH REPORT
P&S batted first with the sun baking down on a rock hard track. Simon and Ben got us off to a steady start, before Ben was dismissed for an enterprising 26. That brought DFS to the middle with us comfortably placed at 44-1 from 12 overs. Another steady stand of 46 was broken when Simon was caught behind for 29.
The Skipper continued the trend of our innings by getting out in the twenties, when he was stumped for 22 walking down the track to the off spinner. Our momentum was temporarily broken by a mini collapse, before we regained our composure and after 34 overs we were 164-6.
DFS was the rock of our innings and he was controlling our push for 200, so that we could gain maximum batting points. In the end we closed our innings on 211-8 and DFS finished with an excellent 67 not out.
Connor and Karthik opened our bowling attack. Karthik was bowling to his usual exceptional standard, but Connor was struggling and was soon replaced at The Kendall end by DFS. The change brought instant success with DFS trapping Livermore lbw in his first over. DFS struck again in his next over with Tom taking a brilliant one handed catch diving to his right.
Connor replaced DFS after his short burst of 4 overs and with his very first ball of his new spell, he bowled Croft for 10. Bishops Waltham were 54-3 off 13 overs. Sam replaced the miserly Karthik, who only went for 8 from his first 6 overs. Once again the change brought instant joy, with Sam clean bowling Taylor for 5.
Sam was enjoying himself bowling from his favoured Creek End and he snared another victim in his fifth over, with Tom taking a juggling catch down the leg side. Connor then produced the ball of the match to dismiss Rudling for 37, with a delivery that swung late and crashed into the timber.
Sam got his third wicket in the 28th over, when he bowled Gunstone for a duck. It was a special moment for Sam in that he had achieved 20 wickets for the season and thus reached a personal target set him by the Skipper. Bishops Waltham were 88-7 from 28 overs and another haul of 24 points seemed inevitable.
At this point Bishops Waltham shut up shop and blocked the majority of the remaining 14 overs. In a desperate bid to gain maximum points the Skipper shuffled the bowling around, but the batsmen were proving to be extremely obdurate. The Skipper brought himself on and grabbed a wicket when Connor took a smart diving catch at mid-on from a mistimed pull shot from Hutton.
That set a grand finale in the last over with the Skipper needing to take the last two wickets, but he could only manage the one with the last delivery of the match, when he bowled their number 7.
It was another impressive match by us on our march towards promotion. The 23 points we gained and the manner of our performance will keep us buoyed up for our next hurdle this Saturday. Keep it going lads. Well done. A special mention goes to Karthik who once again bowled out of his skin with little personal reward, (10 overs 5 maidens 12 runs for none). I am sure all the bowlers would be quick to applaud his efforts and to recognise the contribution he plays in their own success.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Sam on a fantastic season. It is easy to forget that he is a novice at the game, when he has performed so admirable and we have grown to expect the vital contributions he has made to our season.
Unfortunately, Sam can’t play the last two games and he will be a huge loss not only for his bowling, but also for his irreplaceable character. Sam finishes his season on the top of the bowling chart with 20 wickets. His closest rival is Connor who is three wickets behind, but is available for the last two matches.
