Match report
Portsmouth and Southsea 3rd’s v IBM Hursley 3rd
Match Report
We needed a response after our defeat to Ryde Cavaliers and we certainly delivered one in emphatic fashion. IBM Hursley arrived full of confidence on the back of three consecutive victories. The afternoon began well for them, as they won the toss and elected to bat on a very hot day.
Connor opened the bowling from the Kendell end and he immediately hit his straps. He was bowling a fantastic line and length with the ball consistently leaving the right handed batsman. Connor struck in his second over with a looping catch to the Skipper at gulley.
Karthik was hitting the deck hard from the Creek end and was giving the batsman a severe examination of their technique. Along with Connor, he was totally dominating our opponents. Our fielding was offering great support to the bowlers and the pressure was intense for the batsman.
Inevitably that pressure told and in the 12th over Karthik blasted the top order away. First he clean bowled Robbins with a delivery that beat him for pace. Then three balls later, the number four was out for a duck, driving on the up straight to Ben “The Buckets” at mid-off.
At drinks IBM had scraped to 14-3 off 14 overs. Connor and Karthik continued their attack after the break. They bowled their allotted 10 overs each straight through and showed great stamina and skill to maintain the same levels of excellence throughout.
Ramesh and Sam were the change bowlers and they were simply magnificent. They shared 7 wickets for 21 runs from 7.2 overs. After the prolonged hot and dry weather, the wickets were finally starting to turn. Sam was bowling with good flight and he was getting the ball to rag. He drew two of his victims down the wicket and gated them with deliveries that turned sharply and clipped the top of off stump in text book fashion. His first wicket was a mistimed drive to Neil, who took the catch in the covers.
Ramesh was unplayable and all three of his victims were clean bowled. Ramesh finished with the incredible figures of 4 overs, 2 maidens, 3 wickets for 7 runs. The juggernaut had hit town and steam rolled everything in his way.
Sam closed the innings with another beautifully flighted delivery that turned back into the batsman and clipped the top of middle stump. Sam finished with personal best figures of 3.2 overs, 4 wickets for 14 runs. IBM Hursley were all out for a paltry 58 off just 27.2 overs.
Ben and Satish opened our batting. Unfortunately, this was Satish’s last game of the season. He is going home to India and will not be returning until September. The little man with the lion heart and inimitable style will be a huge loss. Satish was quickly into his stride. His first two scoring shots flew over the infield as they whistled to the boundary for fours. He launched the only six of the game, before he was bowled for a rapid 22.
The only disappointment of the afternoon was that we lost another two wickets, before Sean drove the winning run through extra cover. It had only taken us 11.4 overs to hit the runs. It was another brilliant performance and a further 22 points towards our quest for promotion. If we can maintain this level of performance with the ball and fine tune our batting, we will give ourselves every chance of getting that second place. Well done lads!
