Match report
This was always going to be a testing occasion for the visitors. Keiron lost the toss (as usual) and to the surprise of nobody, was asked to bat first on a green and grassy strip. Clem had James for company against Parker (the captain of the Navy side) and Quirke who both enjoyed the new ball. The first six overs were all maidens and in the last of them, Clem's late cut was brilliantly caught at first slip. Jack took the attack to the bowlers and broke the shackles until Parker plucked out his off stump to make the score 23 for 2 (13 overs). James showed a lot of patience and a couple of quality strokes before a direct hit sent him back to the pavilion with 52 on the board.
Tom joined his brother and began very cautiously against the spinners. He was on nought for 23 deliveries, but soon got into his stride with a boundary off Navy slow left-armer, Collins. Together, the brothers added 157 in 23 overs with 11 fours and 6 sixes to knock the stuffing out of the home side. Unfortunately, they were both out in the same over to make the total 209 for 5 with only six overs left and both new batsmen on nought.
The boundaries dried up but plenty of scampering added 36 from those six overs. 245 looked a decent total after having been 5 for one off 9 overs.
Having overcome one hurdle, the US opening pair introduced another with a partnership of 94 from 22 overs. This left them a target of 152 from 28, at 5.4 per over and Rogers (who had scored two 150s already this season) at the crease. He made a subdued start while former Navy skipper Toogood struggled to combat an on-form Jake who bowled him at 107. Jayasinghe went caught behind off Jake at 113. Veteran Gary Hounsome tried to inject some urgency until he became Jake's fourth victim. At this point he had 4-13 from 8.2 overs and had extracted more life and movement from the pitch than anyone else.
Rogers left his assault too late and was caught on the long on boundary at 155 for 5 with nine and a half overs left. Quirke Jnr was caught on the mid-wicket boundary in Chris's third spell. He bowled well from the railway end (7-2-18-1) despite the scattered field and higher run-rate. Easton joined Crofts at 164 with 82 needed from 7.2 overs. Despite scoring off most deliveries, they hit only one four while adding 55.
This was an important win which would have been a defeat two years ago when batting for 50 overs was a rarer phenomenon. Increased patience, knowledge and self-confidence were shown in this game. In the past, panic may have set in at 23 for 2 or at 94 for none, but the team is becoming more mature.
