Match report The reward for a play off win over Havant was a cup semi final on a Sunday morning at Hook which clashed with Fathers Day and we learned that our four County players were not going to be released for this game after all. So we had qualified for a game that we were now struggling to be competetive in. Nevertheless, we welcomed new recruit Nick Cox and U13s Will, Muhammed and Charlie as well as U11 Umar into the team.
Captain John won the toss and we chose to field. We were pretty close to bowling Hooks main man first ball but he then seized the moment and went on the offensive with a few boundaries, and then pushed on to complete his 50 with 10 fours and a six. Nick made the breakthrough with the help of a fine catch by Muhammed, but this just brought the hard hitting number four to the wicket. He hit three big sixes in a quick fire 33 before Charlie bowled him. We were then able to slow down the run rate a bit with another wicket for Nick from a catch behind by Joe, a bowled wicket for Harlan and a stumping by Joe off Will. Hook had scored 173 for 5 off their 20 overs.
174 was a big ask and we needed big runs from our limited batting, but we lost early wickets as Ollie was bowled and Nick was caught. John and Harlan had to consolidate for a while, but they then started scoring well with a mix of strong running and finding the boundary. Harlan gave the away fans a couple of sixes to cheer and by the time he retired the partnership had put on 98. John completed a fine 50 soon after. Joe and Kyle perished trying to go big in the quest for more late runs, and Dan and Muhummed chipped in a few more seeing us up to 125 for 4 off our 20 overs.
We put on a brave display today and battled hard in a game which we needed some of our County boys in to be able to win it. It was a struggle to find 11 to play in this game, but the youngsters who bravely played up an age group (or two) should be rightly proud of themselves. The more experienced players in the team fought hard and made sure that we reached respectability.
