Match report After a number of abortive attempts we finally got to complete our U15 season in a winner takes all clash with the table toppers Petersfield. Although missing a few usual faces we entered the match keen to avenge the drubbing we took at the Heath when playing with only 9 men.
Things started rather shakily as we lost skipper Harry G in the first over before taking a run off the bat. However it was another 90 runs before we lost the next man. Led by the flashing blade of Harry W, Ollie and Joe too played the slow, low conditions well. All got on the front foot in the main but waited well to dispatch the short stuff. Harry's knock was the best of the day by far (including 4 fours and a six) but, even after his departure, it was a surprise when Ollie came down the track and missed one. Joe and our "ice man" JB kept the board rolling mixing good running and big hitting but both were disappointingly run out. However, by the time Nick and Dan had played their part (running 3 byes in the last over - all straight to the gloves) we were handily placed with 135 on the board.
A decent but not unassailable score meant we wanted a good start. Celebrations for a first ball castling were short lived due to the no-ball call but we didn't have too long to wait. The first and fifth balls of Dan's first over crashed into off-stump as he got reward for a season containing plenty of near misses. He repeated the trick in his next over too before finishing with his seasons best figures. Although their star bat was playing a controlled but lone hand, Harry G's 3rd over virtually sealed the result as he took 2 wickets the second to a sharp return catch. At the 5 over mark they had 17 on the board with half the side gone. Our fielding continued to be of good quality and both JB and Mani bowled well to grab a wicket apiece. By this time the opener had retired and the introduction of Tom in the 12th over saw us home as he bowled 10 and Jack to finish things.
While todays standout performances came from Harry W with bat and Dan T with the ball, every one of the side today and all players throughout the season contributed to our success.
Well done boys and best of luck to all who have now finished their colts careers. I hope your adult cricket brings as much success as you've managed to have a colts! We will shortly post a round up of the season in the News section of the website so keen an eye out.
