Match report A narrow defeat for a fast improving U13b team on a glorious sunny morning at 'lawnmowerless' Drayton Park.
Batting first, openers Ollie and Marcus found it tough going, Marcus was run out by a direct hit, and some straight bowling saw us lose our stumps 3 times. The senior partnership of Dan and Will batted sensibly, and Stewart and Alex kept the momentum going, Alex hitting a fine pull shot for four before Stewart was run out by another direct hit. Ben and Tristan batted sensibly and their running confused the fielders at times, but were both undone by straight ones before Amir and Aquib finished the innings solidly. A score of 254 on a slow outfield gave us a chance, and only 7 dismissals a big improvement on our last outing.
Will took his turn with the gloves and Dan's fine fast bowling gave us an early wicket and he was backed up well by the ever straight and reliable Aquib. Alex is looking sharper every game and the batsman struggled to get a bat on his fine bowling whilst Amir was finding some turn from the other end and secured our second wicket. Some good middle order batting from Community started to turn the game, but then Marcus secured two C&B's in his first over and it was game on! The last pair needed to score 12, but despite the efforts of Tristan and the returning Alex and Dan we couldn't get them out and slipped to a narrow 12 run defeat.
Another improved performance, we batted more sensibly, bowled straighter and nearly got out reward. We need to work on our running still, watching where the ball has gone and not just running when we hit a good shot and not assuming the fielder will stop the ball. In the field we need to chase the ball harder to cut those 2's and 3's down, we were unlucky with two direct hits on the stumps with their batsman just home and a couple of edges that could have gone to hand. All in all a good effort in hot conditions in a game that could have gone either way.
