Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 3rd XI v Fareham IV on Sat 28 Jun 2014 at 2.00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 69 runs (reduced target)

Match report A disappointing but understandable defeat. Our opposition included a 1st teamer and 3rd teamer who between them scored virtually 100 of their runs plus we lost a our senior batsmen to similar LBW shouts in quick succession and had the rain come which slowed the boundary count down - so all in all "on an other day..."
We started confidently with Connor and Harlan well in control with the openers going at less than 2 per over. Harlan then took the wicket that changed things. Their no.3 was a strong bat (hitting 7 of his first 8 scoring shots to the boundary)and set about our unlucky change bowlers Phil "I've pulled something" Andrews and Asif "I think we should be bowling the spinners" Batliwala. Asif did however get their other opener as he gloved a pulled to Ollie S at square leg and had the last laugh with their main man getting one to lift and find the edge on the way to Simon. In between, Ollie S and Dimash did the hard yards for us bowling in the teeth of the storm as numbers 3,4 & 5 hit boldly. Harlan's returning spell, while not as economical as we've come to expect did provide some control and saw us take their no.4 thanks to Ollie K's grab at mid off. From then on the remaining bats simply threw everything at each and every ball. It didn't look pretty but it was fairly effective. Connor though kept his nerve to find the edge of their top scorer and watch Phil launch himself off his one good leg to take what is likely to be catch of the season at slip. Connor got our last success comprehensively bowling the slogging no.7. Adding our 30+ extras to the batters tally we needed someone to score big.
Unfortunately while everyone got in no one went on. Ollie K, after lofting the opener back over his head for 4 in the first over, was undone in the 10th being a bit too keen to pull when one stayed low. After a period of accelerated scoring Simon then Sean both perished to LBW's sweeping and effectively our job got harder. Drinks saw off Bergy as he tried and failed to get over the in field first ball back. This left young guns Ollie S and Dimash together. In his most composed innings for the adults Ollie was unlucky to see a couple of good strikes pull up in the wet outfield while at the other end Dimash took advantage initially of some "declaration bowling" before expanding spectacularly smashing the ball to all parts off their main men. After Ollie had holed out Harlan came out and enjoyed some clunky hits - best of which was a pull off the opening bowler (best described as a character!). We closed well short but the performances of the lads were great to see, particularly Dimash ending on 42*. We'll play worse than this and end up convincing winners on another day.
