Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 2nd XI v Compton on Sat 09 Aug 2014 at 1.30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won 1 wicket

Match report A fantastic fight back from a position that we should never have gotten ourselves into.

On a hard st james track I won the toss (for once) and much to everyones dismay decided to field. 5 seamers and a brand new ball won the day in my mind.

Two wickets in the first 8 overs soon made everyone feel a little better, but knowing Compton as we do so well over the years we knew the strong hitting turner brothers were to come and Elms who has a great record against us was still in. Jake peach got rid of James turner bowled for a powerful 29 and greg turner fell into the leg side trap to matt Williams and at 80-4 we were right in amongst them.

Elms was still going steady but only found support from shaw who was cruelly dropped by jack standing in for cripple rogers at keeper and his scratchy 31 threatened to be the usual innings that made a difference. Elms batted through for a well made 50 but struggled to accelerate as he didn't trust his partners and all the bowlers bowled very well at the death. 194 felt very gettable.

at 10-2 all of a sudden my call at the toss wasn't looking good. But Jack was in scintillating form. Cover driving and square cutting absolutely beautifully and he had a stunning 70 from the first 100 runs scored. He destroyed an old nemesis of many of the boys Gilbert who has got me out with his slow stuff and you knew that Compton were running out of ideas.

And then our collape...JD holed out to mid off, dowler punched one to the short cover fielder and then jake was out stumped. All of a sudden the rate was at 6 and me and matt Williams were back to where we were a week before. we rebuilt to get with 50 of the total and then matt was brilliantly caught at short midwicket and I was plumdog lbw, and doug was soon out for collapse number 2.

Enter mr nervous collier and hero from last week toby. Compton were forced to go back to the two slow bowlers once turner had bowled out and both played the rest of the chase beautifully. Having survived a run out mess both batters had played a blinder. Rich is getting used to this! well done boys.

Big mention for chris dowle, bowled and fielded superbly and was great to see him. If only you could every week mate...good luck with the marriage!
