Hythe & Dibden v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 02 Aug 2014 at 1.30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Well I can honestly say this was our best win since taking the captaincy. Pre game we were worried about a lack of batting depth and when we turned up and the opposition opted to bat on a very green track we wondered if it was going to be our day.
Hythe raced out of the blocks with all the batsman really coming hard at us in the first 10 overs. Matt Williams got the crucial early breakthrough but will be the first to admit it wasn't his finest spell of new ball bowling such was his pre game hangover(more on that later). Fortunately for us, 4 players who looked well set kept hitting the ball to smithy (his drinking partner) who held every vital chance.
Toby turned the game. 68-1 became 114-6 thanks to a brilliant spell of four wickets. But throughout the innings they just kept coming at us and number 7 whacked 40 runs after the second drinks break in our usual calamitous spell.
That 40 was brought to an end by Ian rogers catch. It was outstanding, amazing, brilliant. I don't know what else to say! those that were there will remember it for years! top stuff big man!
Ben bowled well and on another day could have had a lot more wickets. Jez took a top catch standing back but struggled a little standing up to Ben this week on a tough track for the keeper. Keep working at it bud, it will come.
Doug and Matt smith along with Rich closed out the death overs at the lower order in a much better fashion than in previous weeks and when we knocked over the last man we had been set 213 to win. It was an all action innings for sure as it felt a wicket or a 4 was coming every ball.
At tea Matt Williams told me he was a disgrace who had let himself and his friends and family and his dog down. I told him he owed me some runs so got him in at the dizzy heights of 8. Turned out ok that one...
We got off to an awesome start with james and ian taking on a very quick opening bowler to great effect. James hit 3 massive 6s in his lovely 30 and Ian went on to compile a fantastic 51 before being unfortunately run out backing up whilst using james as his runner. Meaning james was effectively out twice! Cheers for coming bro :-)
Sathish batted positively and survived a very big shout for caught behind. But as the man himself said "I did not hit" and therefore it must have been the case. His good contribution of 23 was vital in keeping the rate going.
Smithy was incredibly unlucky to fall for a well made 21 to a ball that seemed to just die in the pitch and roll along the floor. Doug and Rich both soon perished for 9 and 2 respectively and the rate climbed to nearer 5 an over again with ten still go bat.
So I was joined by Matt Williams. A man who I think owed me one and he paid me back in spades. I fell for 33 that was not one of the prettiest innings of my career with just 12 needed from 3 overs. The big man got us home in style hitting a big six to bring it down to just a few runs and toby finished it off, crashing a 4 through square leg to complete a wonderful team effort and a memorable run chase.
Boys - We have so much potential as a team. And next year we must play like challengers. We need to work on those lapses in the field and the sloppy bowling that always seems to cost us during the final 15 overs of matches. This week we pulled it off but it has cost us in weeks gone by. weve got a fantastic set of players to pick from now and you are a pleasure to skipper. We just need to learn fast and deliver on our promise next time. Your final target for this year is win 3 more games. Weve not won 8 league games for a while. So lets finish as high as we can.
