Match report Champions!!

Another tense one from which Hero Hoolahan saw us all but home with two fours off the last two balls of the penultimate over. But more of that later......
Losing the toss we were asked to field by the reigning National Champs. We came out of the blocks really hard. Harrys W & H bowled quick and straight and at the end of the 4th over they were 6 for 1, the scalp going to HH with the help of a smart backward point catch from Harry G. The change bowlers rather suffered from our great start. Their batters had to chance their arms and for a while we got a little ragged in the field as they hurried to 55 of 9. The introduction of Dan Cox (with support from Harry Leggett) put the breaks on and caused some real wobbles as his flighted offspin had the batters in knots. 4 overs 2 wickets for 11 runs were outstanding figures for Dan. Not to be out done, Leggie weighed in with his last two overs conceding only 1 run for 2 wickets. With the slog and scamper on HH & HW closed the innings out with us being set 99 for a famous win.
It all started so serenely with our answer to Hobbs & Sutcliffe (ask your grandads boys), "Gadders and Wratty" skipping along at a classy 6 an over. Unfortunately HG fell one shy of a deserved retirement but HW retired (again - still no average!). As is often the way the new bats found it hard to get going against a suddenly buoyant bowling attack and focused field. Like us they mixed seam and spin well. With the run rate climbing JB hit a super on drive for 4 and Dan C a middled pull for the same to keep us in the hunt. However losing wickets in the 16th, 18th & 19th overs put them in the box seat for perhaps the first time in the match. With 10 required off 10 balls and 2 new batters on 0 (Messrs Hoolahan and Kanavan) it was Hartley Wintney all over again. A dot and a nervy inside edge from Ollie got Big 'Arry on strike. He then proceeded to dispatch a full toss to the mid wicket fence to open his account and ease jangling nerves and when he danced down the track to smack the next and last ball of the over in the same direction we were almost there (400% strike rate - very IPL). So just a single needed off the last 6 balls. Ollie had the honour of taking us over the line as he pushed the first ball to mid off and hared home. A deserved victory. Well done to all the lads who played tonight. Both to those who made the headlines and those who were very much part of the team in a committed fielding performance - and victory dance!
