Match report Regrettably, the first taste of defeat for the season. Playing away to Hambledon CC with key players missing was always going to be a stern test, but it was clear that every member of the team rose to the challenge and gave their best. Captain for the day, Harrison Whitworth won the toss and elected to bat first, however the makeshift opening line up of Pat Sillence, Ben Caldera and Charlie Corbett struggled to defend their wickets and also get some runs on the board, making heavy weather against quick and accurate bowling from the Hambledon opening bowlers. Fortunately, Tom Lavery and Harrison Whitworth were able to dig in and get the scoreboard ticking over. Tom retired after a magnificent 50 runs, Harrison followed shortly after, leaving Joe Hawkins, Ollie Perrin and Ben Saunders to finish off the innings with plenty of inventive stroke-play, quick scampering between the wickets and, in Ollie’s case, some thunderous blows to, and over the boundary to post a creditable 136 run target.
Charlie Cupples and Ben Jackson opened the bowling, however a breakthrough wicket was not forthcoming, Charlie was replaced by Charlie Corbett after 2 overs. Ben pulled off a dramatic caught and bowled, and Charlie’s wicket was scant reward for his 4 overs of accurate and pacey bowling which raised the spirits in the field. Attempting to keep the opposition batsmen on their toes, the Captain changed the bowlers at regular intervals, calling on spells from Ben Caldera, Ben Saunders and Ollie Perrin. Unfortunately, despite these change of bowlers and some exemplary fielding, Hambledon managed to hit the winning runs in the 18th over.
The match statistics do not reflect the how well the lads played together as a team. Every member tried their best, which unfortunately was just not enough to earn them a victory.
