Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 15B v Fareham on Thu 12 May 2011 at 18.00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 76 runs

Match report Having won the toss, P&S Captain Sam Collings-Wells elected to bat, and on a firm and true St James pitch under a beautiful sunlit sky, he and Tom Lavery opened the batting. Facing accurate and fast bowling, the pair made full use of the close boundary, and began scoring at a brisk rate until Sam was bowled for 17. Joining Tom in the middle, Seb Herold set about the bowlers with his signature hefty blows and quick running between the wickets. All the while Tom managed to score runs at a steady pace but was unfortunate to be caught out for 14. Next batsman, Ben Caldera played a mature innings, finding the gaps in the field, keeping the runs ticking over and then later hitting some mighty blows to clear the boundary with ease. Seb was caught out after a quick-fire 40, replaced by Charlie Corbett who settled in quickly and began knocking the ball to all corners of the ground. He and Ben did well to keep the scorers busy before Ben was given out on 28 runs. Batting at No 6, Joe Hawkins and Charlie saw out the final overs of the innings to reach a creditable 148 runs.
In the field, P&S struck early as Ben Jackson and Charlie Cupples made the early break through. They bagged the wickets of the opening pair for few runs. With sharp fielding, the close in boundary by the fence was well guarded, sealing off any easy run opportunities and applying firm pressure on the batting side. As the middle order Fareham batsmen made attempts to hit out, the ever alert P&S fielders snapped up the catches, wicketkeeper Pat Sillence and slip fielder Seb Herold each holding on to fine catches. All the bowlers, both spin and pace, did exceptionally well, each taking wickets by bowling accurate line and length deliveries, however it was Charlie Cupples who was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for a miserly 15 runs in 4 overs. His confidence continues to grow with each match.
This is the second victory of the season and it is clear the lads are gelling together well as a team, and enjoying their cricket – long may it continue. To capitalise on their two successes, the team should work harder to support the Team Captain, particularly in setting the field and ordering the bowling line up. My thanks and appreciation to Julie Jackson for her scoring duties. Well done team and good luck for the next match against Petersfield.
