Match report Match Report – P&S v Havant 31 Jul 09
Played on the last day of the season, this match was the replay of the earlier planned match which was abandoned due to rain. Havant won the toss and elected to swing the willow on a firm batting pitch. In the absence of their regular skipper, P&S took to the field under the leadership of Pat Sillence and under a clear sunlit evening sky, Seb Herold and Harrison Whitworth opened up the bowling. The visiting opening bats, Mason and Reed, batted well to reach retirement allowing the following batsmen to take the fight to the next bowlers. The Captain did well to vary the bowlers, unfortunately without much success until young Ben Saunders, a late addition to the team, made the telling breakthrough taking 2 wickets in his opening over and a third wicket in his last to be the pick of the bowlers.
Promoted to open the batting, Seb and Tom Lavery made a solid start, unfortunately Tom fell to a particularly quick and accurate ball early in the innings. Harrison replaced Tom, and the two soon set about the bowling attack. Seb retired after a signature quick-fire 32, before Harrison and Joe Hawkins took on the bowlers, dispatching the ball to all corners of the field with some fairly unorthodox big hits for 4s and 6s. As the light began to get gloomy, Harrison retired on 33, allowing Ben Jackson to enter the fray and wrap up the match in the 14th over.
Despite the absence of the Hampshire players, the make-shift P&S team pulled together to record a fine victory to end the season in style.
