Match report Unlike most starts to the season, the weather was ideal for this Sunday morning match. With a stiff northerly breeze assisting the swing bowlers, Hambledon won the toss and chose to bat first on their artificial strip and soon posted a healthy run rate with Thistlewaite retiring on 30 and Charlie Corbett dismissing their other high scoring opener Lewis LBW. Harrison Whitworth took the other opener Smith for a lowly 4 runs. The P&S spin team made an excellent start to their spell taking the wickets of Prentice and Jackson, Ben Jackson in particular taking a wicket on his first delivery. Hambledon sent in their big hitter Brown at the tail of their innings who managed to increase the run rate despite some excellent fielding by the P&S outfield. He was finally run out by Matt Walker on the last ball of the innings.
Unfortunately, the P&S innings got off to a poor start, with captain Sam Collings-Wells dismissed for 3. Ed Coulson played a fine patient innings, steadying the side and allowing Seb Herold the freedom to knock up an rapid 31 not out with the side’s highest strike rate of 172.2. Matt Walker contributed a valuable 10 runs before being caught at fine leg. Unfortunately the remainder of the batsmen, Charlie Corbett, Harrison Whitworth, Pat Sillence and Ben Jackson as hard as they tried, against some accurate and quick bowling, could not maintain the required and ever increasing run rate and eventually ran out of overs, 9 runs short of the target.
It was good to get the first match played and has highlighted the importance of the batting strike rate in this format of cricket.
