Match report Despite the very welcome sunshine, the playing area was still quite damp and so the toss was vitally important. Unfortunately it was won by Le Clercq who wasted no time in opting to field first.
There was significant movement for the opening bowlers, but despite many close calls, edges didn’t happen. After 14 overs there were 33 runs on the board. At this point, the visiting spinners took over and survival became even more difficult. After 21 overs the scoreboard read 49 for 3. South African leg spinner Behrens had taken 3 for 9 in four overs.
Ewen was then joined by Ollie and the pair added 51 in 19 overs, the highest partnership of the match. Behrens returned and added three more wickets to his tally. 32 runs were squeezed out of the last ten overs so Hambledon needed 152 from their 50 overs. Ewen had battled heroically before being run out by an accurate kick on the penultimate delivery.
Both the pitch and the outfield had become drier and quicker by the time the visitors began their reply. Marshall (a thorn in our side in the past) went early, but the run rate soon rose above 4 an over thanks to aggressive batting by Behrens and Pratt, but the former was out at 35 in the ninth over. Pratt continued in the same vein until the 13th over when he left at 64 for 3. Sharma continued to attack before he became Max’s first victim of the season, at 112 for 4. Butcher didn’t last long, but Le Clercq and Primmer completed the job with nearly 17 overs to spare.
Significantly, P&S had hit only 8 fours while the winners hit 11 as well as 4 sixes. Four points was a miserable return for a game where the tosscwas so crucial.
