Match report On another fine day, Ben won the toss and chose to bat on a dry pitch. From the outset, the batting was attritional. Matt’s five boundaries shone brightly, but he was the first to go, in the 20th over with 45 on the board. Toby and Ewen then put together a partnership of 55, but it took 19 overs. Jack replaced Ewen before Toby played on at 118 for 3. Tom was expertly caught on the long off boundary three runs later. Dean was caught behind at 135 for 5 with 5 overs remaining. This was the first time the run rate reached 3 per over. Jack and Chris added 38 precious runs from 27 deliveries. Off the penultimate ball the third batting point was secured and the bowlers had a chance of winning.
Jono clearly relished the pace and bounce available on this pitch although his opening wicket was a low catch by wicket keeper, Matt Benfield with only 5 runs on the board. The home side’s innings lacked a substantial partnership although their early run rate was superior. The best partnership was 34 for the second wicket, taken by Ewen. The next five wickets fell for 55 and were shared by Ben and Max. Newman and Vaughan added 28 for the eighth wicket, Jono inducing a catch behind. George stayed with Newman for 8 overs, but the latter was content to take singles.
Max ended the match on a hat trick and his best bowling figures of the league season so far.
