Scorecard

Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club T20 v Waterlooville on Sun 22 Aug 2021 at 14:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost In the super over

Match report This was as exciting a game as you could imagine. Both teams raised exactly the same total for the same number of wickets lost, but as the scorecard suggests, the bowling was superior to the batting. Nobody scored more than 23 which was appropriately the top score in each innings.
Waterlooville won the toss and fielded. The top order never go going. They were reduced to 26 for 4 by Sam Hillman (2-14) and Sonny Reynolds who finished with 4 for 10. A recovery was made, Tom and Ollie adding 38, but when they were out, the score read an unpromising 82 for 7. Ben and Jono raised a quick 22 to give the scoreboard a more encouraging appearance, but I doubt that anybody thought 109 was a winning total.
However, it turned out to be a much more challenging task than was expected. Dan Birch opened and was eighth out with the score on 71 for 8. The damage had been done by Keiron and Matt W who between them took 7 for 39. The only significant help for Birch was 19 from 16 balls from Sonny Reynolds. The visitors’ best partnership was yet to come. Sam Robinson and Charlie Jackson added 30 in quick time and when the latter was bowled by Matt B, the Ville needed nine to win. When the last ball approached, they still needed 3. The delivery was skied by Hillman to the dark corner at long off where a difficult chance was spilt. Two were run and the scores were not only level, but identical.
This meant that a super over was required to separate the teams. Waterlooville batted first and made seven from Jono’s over. Alex Shephard was the only casualty, skying to Jack for 6.
Eight from six balls did not seem too daunting a target, but the nominated bowler was the tall and pacy Sonny Reynolds. Jack took a single off the first ball. Matt drove the second for two and ran a bye off the third. Jack was then run out by a very good throw from Birch, going for a second run. Three were needed from two deliveries, but Reynolds needed only one, bowling Tom and ending the tightest game many of the spectators have ever seen.
Waterlooville now play Basingstoke in the Plate final.
