Match report On a sunny evening at St Helens our 13s put up a good fight against Portsmouth but just fell short. Having won the toss Harrison elected to bowl first and he took the new ball along with Elliott and they both bowled with great accuracy not allowing the Portsmouth batsman any width to play their shots. Talitha with her brisk out swingers and Henry with his leg breaks both kept the pressure on and with some tight fielding we were restricting the Portsmouth score. Felix came on and his off spinners were bowled with great flight and turn and his 3 overs only went for 8 runs, a great effort on a small pitch. Behind the wicket Tom was keeping the byes down and the pressure was starting to build. Ollie, William and Charlie came into attack as the Portsmouth batsman decided it was time to open their shoulders and our bowling and fielding became a bit ragged and the runs started to accelerate and Portsmouth ended up on 111. Wickets were shared with Talitha picking up 2 in 2 balls and Elliott and Henry both one each. We got off to a slow but steady start, Harrison and Tom played some good shots but it was Elliott who kept us in the game mixing defence with boundaries. Some of his back foot shots through the covers were a joy to watch and with Ollie who also showed some great promise took us to needing 30 off 4 overs but a flurry of wickets left us needing 15 off the last over and despite some good shots from Felix the Portsmouth fielders were on top of their game and Portsmouth ended up winning by 8 runs. Overall a good performance where the only real difference was the amount of wides we bowled compared to their team.
