Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 13A v Portsmouth on Wed 03 Jul 2019 at 6pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 54 runs
Match report
A dominant performance from start to finish would be the best way to describe our contest against Portsmouth.
Today the skipper won the toss and elected to bat on a used deck. Tom and James walked into open again and took a cautious start playing no risk cricket against their county opening pair. As they got into their work the pair of them put away the bad ball and ran confidently in between the wickets. It was evident early on their were some demons in the surface and Curwood became the first victim after an unlucky LBW (after surviving a plumb one 2 balls previous!) Jack entered the crease at 3 and took no time at all to assert his dominance and show his intent. After a flurry of well timed boundaries through the leg side Tom's time had come to retire just as he looked to really crack on. As Harrison walked in we were well ahead of the game nearing 3 figures and only 1 wicket down. Jack was the next man to fall after smacking a 6 into the tree, he went for glory again but as his bat got stuck in the ground, he was cleaned up. Younger bro was in at 5 and like big bro he showed his aggression early, he himself proving the Jack isn't the only Nay who could clear the ropes. Harrison was the next victim to the grubber and he had to depart. Elliot H was in at 6 and he looked to run hard early, in the mean time partner Ryan also fell after being bowled. With a handful of overs left it was time for our lower order to express themselves and push the score up. However this is where the mayhem started. As we entered the last over of the innings we were in a healthy position with Elliot H and Fin at the crease. First ball Elliot goes for the 3rd tier but is smartly caught at extra cover - first man gone. As the batsman crossed Fin was on strike and went for a HUGE heave onto the leg side but was cleaned up - second gone. Young Etherington was in for which was surely his first hatrick ball but he was not going to surcome to the pressure, he himself went for the big shot but nicked it to the keeper who took a good grab - and that's a hatrick. Rob Higgins it was down to you, 3 balls left, bowler looking for 4 in 4 but with a mighty strike the big man hit the biggest six of the day. Unfortunately the result wasn't the same the following ball as he too was cleaned up. Which meant we had set our local rivals a strong total of 157 to win.
Wheeler, like with the bat opened up and set the tone early finding some serious lift off the surface, juxtaposing from the first innings. Jack did the same at the metaphorical other end, not allowing their bats to get off to the strong start that was needed. Our quick left armer even left a nice cherry on the top of the oppositions star mans lid. As usual the spinners were next on with Harrison making the first breakthrough and James being hard to put away meant he walked away with season best returns of just 8-2 off his 3 over spell. Ryan felt his first over wasn't up to his usual very high standards so asked the skipper for a break to see if another bowler could make a breakthrough, and so once again Rob was the man to deliver with his first over being a very testing wicket maiden. Elliot H was the next to be thrown the ball and like those before him had kept it tight and the game was out of sight for the opposition. Big Etherington then gave younger Etherington the responsibility of the death overs and his straight bowling meant that Portsmouth weren't given any added opportunities to score. Fin as usual kept superbly on a difficult track and continued to rally the troops.
A much better and confident performance from the boys. Although we drifted off in the last period of the game it was a much better return for us. Time to finish on a high next Tuesday up at Hambledon!
