Played under a glorious Summer blue sky, Sam Collings-Wells and Matt Walker opened up the batting to race away to a 44 run lead until Sam retired after another signature quick fire big hitting 34. Following in his skipper’s footsteps, Seb Herold knocked up a creditable 17 runs until being bowled going for a big hit to clear the boundary . All the while, Matt set a steady pace to make a valuable 12 runs before being caught. What follows can only be explained as a sudden rush of blood to the head of the middle order batsmen, with their score card making dismal reading. Wicket after wicket fell, providing encouragement to the opposition and real concern for the home supporters. With scores the lads will not care to remember, Charlie Corbett was bowled for a paltry 2 runs, Harrison Whitworth carelessly run out for a dismal 5 runs, followed by Pat Sillence bowled for a duck, leaving Ben Jackson not out on 1 run without batting out the full allocation of overs, a sin in 20/20 cricket.
Faced with a daunting task, cometh the hour cometh the team, although 2 fielders shy, the lads set about their task with fire, energy and attacking vigour. Seb Herold started the attack from his favoured Pavilion End and immediately took the wicket of the opening pair for no runs. In came the batsmen, one after the other, soon to return to the pavilion, with only G Martin offering some resistance to knock up a very creditable 31 runs. In a race to mop up the tail end, the combination of bulls-eye accuracy and fire-bolt pace, the bowlers achieved very credible figures. Of significant note was the few extras given away – 3 runs in 11 overs.
This was a memorable match in many ways, a depleted 9 man team with a middle order batting collapse, attacking cricket in the field, tight bowling and a true belief in their teamwork. Well done lads.
