Hambledon B v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 13B on Sun 27 May 2018 at 10am
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Dark skies and thunderstorms gave way to a beautiful morning in Hambledon, so nice in fact that several of our players took detours around the picturesque country lanes and almost didn’t make it. Thankfully all were accounted for in the end and although we only had eight the boys were confident of a good performance against always strong opposition. Hambledon won the toss and to our surprise chose to bat on a pitch that we were always going to bowl on first if we had won the toss. We started well and H and Tom were soon amongst the wickets, Elliott on debut bowled well and James kept a good line and made the batsmen work for their runs. There was though a fly in the ointment as our fielding was erratic and little slap dash. Hambledon’s total was starting to rise and missing a man in the field was taking its toll. Fortunately Ryan stepping up form the u11’s was on hand to steady the ship and bowled beautifully for 4 overs and deserved more than the 1 wicket he took. A great runout from H was our final wicket of the innings and Hambledon finished on 141-4, about 20 too many due to the avoidable extras we conceded.
With a large total to chase down James and Tom opened the innings and were both soon hitting boundaries. Tom to his credit showed a new side to his game as he took on the role of anchoring the innings as James swished and swatted his way to a quick 35 and retirement for the 2nd game in a row. H came in and took over where James had left off and the formidable chase was being made to look quite easy…… Cue the mini collapse! Nothing in cricket is easy and the variable bounce that had been a problem all game did for Tom when one shot through low on him and then two balls later a repeat performance got rid of Finn. Hambledon’s best bowler had his gander up now and Alfie was soon back in the hutch without troubling the scorer and the skipper could only look on in despair from the non-strikers end. A maiden from the home team in the next over didn’t help, Hambledon were now loking the favourites and although H was playing a captains innings at one end he wasn’t going to do it alone. Thankfully cometh the hour, cometh the man! Elliott on debut produced a scintillating barrage of shots in the penultimate over including one huge 6 and with 8 needed off the last over a quick 4 and a couple wides got us home with balls to spare.
A great win, with some great performances, just need to sharpen up a bit in the field.
