Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 11A v Sarisbury Athletic on Wed 13 Jun 2018 at 6pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Being asked to field, Ryan and Harrison led the way with tidy opening spells. While wickets didn't fall immediately we were keeping the scoring rate under control. It was the introduction of the limping Henry (calf) that brought our first wicket as 'keeper Tom took an excellent tumbling catch off a skier in front of the wicket. Our other casualty, stiff necked Elliott, bowled our most economical spell with our only maiden of the evening. Talitha produced her usual waspish pace and away swing while Sid bowled stump to stump and continued to ask questions of the bats. As their opener drew closer to retirement so all the bats expanded their shot making and we became a little ragged in the field. I am always happy for fielders to throw at stumps for run outs - but we need to try to back up. On two occasions we conceded 4 over throws - both times the run out was on, so a legitimate occasion to have a shy - but both times we had no-one moving to back up. Something to work on perhaps. With Sarisbury in the ascendancy, Felix and Roman opened their spells. Felix kept a decent line but it was Roman that cause the problems with flight. Twice he tempted strikes into Ryan's safe hands at mid off. That left just enough time for Elliott's good throw to collect us our last wicket from a run out. So we needed 121 to collect our second win of the season.
It all started so smoothly. Initially Ryan then latterly Harrison found boundaries off their opening bowlers. Timing the ball superbly and scoring all around the ground Ryan reached his deserved retirement while Harrison continued his good work. For once Henry missed out, just feathering a nick behind off their best bowler. Elliott's confident start was undone by a well flighted ball and Tom, after cracking a marvellous on drive for 4, had his stumps rattled. When Harrison's good hand was ended by a square leg catch things were starting to get somewhat edgy. The early fast scoring meant we were well ahead on run rate but with still about 30 needed wickets were running out. Talitha and Sid halted the slide by keeping out the good balls and ran intelligently to reduce the deficit. However, both were bowled leaving Roman and Felix to find 20 runs against their best bowlers. Roman was the picture of concentration and ensured we kept the wickets in tact. Felix however took the fight to the bowlers. Their main man, who already had 3 wickets, was firstly dispatched through midwicket like a tracer and a couple of balls later lifted over square leg for the brace of 4s that bought us to within touching distance. With the bowlers getting up a pace we watched with relief as 4 byes came and took the scores level. A further scampered bye saw us home with an over to spare. In the end it was a comfortable finish but it felt anything but that before Felix's timely intervention. His striking was a real game changer.
Although key performances grabbed the headlines, everyone contributed in some way to the result so well done all.
