Match report A wretched batting display undermined all the good work done in the field and provided great encouragement to the four teams below us in table, three of whom won.
This was not so much a game of two halves as one of two quarters, so few of the overs being required by both teams. The match was completed in less than 52 overs. Gosport won the toss and chose to bat and were soon in trouble against Jake who took the first three wickets for 19. The visitors were then 32 for 3 after ten overs. Two overs later, Rob joined the attack and bowled for the rest of the innings. New Zealander Campbell and skipper Larner showed the only resistance, the highest partnership being 24 for the eighth wicket, ended by a tremendous catch by Ollie, running to third man to dive and take the skier inches off the ground. Rob, bowling a full length, was irresistible. Only youngster Harris looked able to cope. The innings ended at 2:22pm when tea was taken.
P & S needed exactly two runs per over to win. Through their innings, they averaged over three per over. Unfortunately, the innings only lasted an hour and a half and like Gosport’s, contained only two partnerships in excess of twenty; 28 for the third wicket and 20 for the last wicket when Gosport were suddenly worried that Chris and Ben might snatch victory.
Fittingly, neither side claimed a batting point. They didn’t deserve one. Despite an away success record of 80%, five consecutive home defeats have awakened fears of relegation. Of the last seven matches, four are at home.
