SOUTHEAST REGIONAL DIVISION 1

SATURDAY 7TH JULY 2018

PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA 3RD’S CRUISE TO EASY WIN

Curdridge could only raise nine players as a result of the England game even though the fixture started at 11.00am. It was agreed they would bat first and in a perfect world we hoped to have the game done and dusted with 24 points under our belt before settling down to watch England beat Sweden in the World Cup quarter final.

Connor and Romit opened our bowling on the hottest day of the year. Connor continued to lead from the front when he caught and bowled Keough for 8 in the third over. Romit was bowling superbly from the Creek End and was squeezing the life out of Curdridge. In his third over Romit induced a frustrated drive from Bollard that sliced high into the air, where the dependable Manny took the catch in the covers.

Harrington was taking Connor and the attacking cordon of fielders on. He had dispatched 5 fours, before he failed to keep a powerful on-drive down and drilled it straight to Harrison who took a juggling catch at mid-on. Connor won the battle as Harrington left the action for 21.

Connor picked up his third wicket with a brilliant full length swinging delivery that beat Janes’ attempted drive and comprehensively bowled him for 4. Curdridge were struggling at 47-4 in the 11th over. Connor and Romit bowled their allotted overs straight through and Romit was at his miserly best with figures of 1-14 from his 8 overs. Connor added another 3 wickets to his tally and removed the dangerous Harrington in the process.

Qasir and Sam took the bowling up and Qasir struck with his very first delivery. Manda was deceived by Qasir’s extra pace and he could only loop up a catch from a full delivery pitched on leg stump into the grateful hands of DFS at mid-wicket.

That brought Reilley and Tavender together in the middle and they produced the best partnership of the innings. They had put on 32, until Reilley’s stumps were re-arranged by a full length delivery from Qasir that was too quick for him. Reilly departed for 16 and Curdridge were on the brink at 90-6 in the 23rd over.

Dimmick entered the fray and he also showed some resilience. A partnership of 29 had been added with Tavener, when the skipper brought Manny on at the Creek End in the 28th over. With only his second delivery, Manny tempted Dimmick into driving a simple caught and bowled chance straight back into his reliable hands and the partnership of 29 had been broken. The next ball saw Pinut chip an easy catch to Connor in the covers. Manny will resume his next bowling spell on a hat-trick and finished with figures of 0.3 overs 2 wickets for no runs. It was the perfect birthday present for Manny “The Rhino” who was celebrating his 37th birthday. Curdridge were all out for 119 in 28.3 overs.

DFS and Gary began our reply and were facing the bowling of Dimmick and Janes. Janes began the second over from the Kendall End. Bollard who was keeping, was standing back a good 30 yards. I think the heat must have been taking its toll on Bollard and he had mistaken Janes for Dale Steyn. Gary worked a single off the third ball and DFS was facing his first ball as Janes ran in hard. Janes tried to work DFS over with a short pitch delivery and was rewarded by seeing DFS pull him for a huge six over mid-wicket. Janes tried the same trick with his next delivery and this time DFS rocked back and pulled him emphatically over square leg for a thunderous four. Janes only bowled another 2 overs without a glimmer of success, before he took himself out of the attack.

Dimmick in contrast was much more of an accomplished bowler and bowled a good line and length with his right arm off spin. Dimmick got the breakthrough in the 7th over, when he bowled DFS for an aggressive 22. Jason joined Gary with the score on 34-1. Another 32 runs were added before Dimmick struck again, when he bowled Jason for a solid 15.

Manny came in at 4 and immediately set about attacking the bowling. The boundaries were soon flowing off Manny’s bat and the game was over 8.5 overs later. The game was fittingly concluded with a pull shot from Manny that sailed over the mid-wicket boundary for 6. Manny finished 36 not out and his knock included three sixes and three fours. Gary was unflappable at the other end and finished with a composed 31 not out.

It was a dominant display and we gained another 24 points in the win for the second week running. We have now won four consecutive victories and six out of eight wins for the season.

We have started July brilliantly and we are hitting our straps at just the right time. We have another massive fixture this Saturday when we travel to Compton and it is vital that we win it to set up a mouth watering clash with Sarisbury 3rd’s the following week.

Well done lads on a ruthless performance and let’s keep the momentum building. Up The Mighty 3rd’s! Bring it on!!
