SENSATIONAL SHAN PUTS PORTSMOUTH TO THE SWORD

We made first use of a good strip on a fine summer’s day. Gary and DFS opened, but it did not start well when Gary was run out in the fifth over. Bergy came in at 3 and put on a stand of 20 with DFS. It was a surprise when DFS edged Chapman to the first slip for a serene 18. Manny was next in and played in his usual aggressive manner. It didn’t take long for the boundaries to be peppered from his stroke play. Once again it was a surprise when Manny fell to the last ball before the drink break, chopping on from the off spin of Sahak for 31.

A buzz of excitement filled the air as Qasir made his way to the middle with us comfortably set at 84-3 from 20 overs. Unfortunately, on this occasion we were not to be treated to a pyrotechnic display of batting from (Boom Boom) Qasir. He departed for 4 after he skied Sahak down the throat of backward point.

Nobody could have predicted what was to follow, when Shan came in at 6. He began his innings circumspectly as he took measure of the bowling, before he launched into a ferocious assault on the bowlers. It was like watching a lion circling his prey before tearing it apart. Boundaries screamed off his bat from an array of superlative shots. Anything short was seized upon and gleefully dispatched with an assortment of powerful hook and pull shots. One monstrous pull shot sailed out of the ground and towards the Eastern Road. When the ball was pitched up, Shan smashed it down the ground. The bowlers were completely at his mercy and he was gorging himself on their offerings.

Shan and Bergy put 130 in 17 overs and the partnership was broken when Bergy was stumped off the experienced off spin of Boorah in the 38th over for 64. Shan was on 88 going into the last over and he deserved to get a hundred for his scintillating innings. Unfortunately, he could not add to his total as he was also stumped off the bowling of Boorah. Shan’s magnificent innings included 5 huge sixes and 8 thunderous fours. We closed our innings on a brilliant 236-7.

Connor opened our bowling from The Kendall End and removed Davis with his second delivery. Connor induced Davis into a drive and Tom took a regulation catch with the gloves. It got even worse for the visitors when Connor bowled Walton for a duck with a ball that jagged back.

Romit was keeping it tight from The Creek End and he burst into the match with a wicket in his 5th, 6th and 7th over. First Savage mistimed a drive straight to Qasir at mid-on, then Sahak mistimed a pull shot and Sam took a skier at mid-off. Finally, Boorah was trapped lbw to complete a mesmerising passage of play to leave Portsmouth sinking at 60-5.

We were now operating with spin from both ends. Sam from The Creek End and Rajesh from The Kendall End. Chapman was looking a class above his fellow batsmen in the Portsmouth line up and was regularly hitting boundaries. He was looking very organized and he was finally getting some help from Slimm at 7. They had put on 42, before Sam bowled Slimm for 20 with a fuller delivery.

Three balls later Sam got the wicket of Chapman for a fine 53. Chapman holed out to long on, where Qasir took an excellent catch. Portsmouth were all but finished on 106-7. Shan replaced Rajesh and was generating a lot of pace. He was too quick for Stretton who was castled before he could even bring his bat down. Three overs later and Shan took an amazing one handed caught and bowled catch that flashed to his left from a drive by Marston. The emphatic victory was completed when Sam took his own caught and bowled catch, when Mckenzie chipped a good length delivery back to him.

It was an excellent bowling display by all the bowlers and the wickets were shared around. Sam and Romit both got 3, whilst Connor and Shan shared two apiece. I was delighted with our all round performance and it was great to get our first 24 points win of the season. Well done lads, now let’s get another 24 points this Saturday against Havant 3rd’s and continue our climb up the table. Up The Mighty 3rd’s!! Bring it on!!!
