Match report

PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA III V OLD NETLEY & HIGHFIELD II
SOUTHEAST LEAGUE DIVISION 1
LANGSTONE SAILING CENTRE
SATURDAY 5TH MAY 2018

We began a new campaign in a new league with a new team on a glorious sunny day. We won the toss and elected to bat to show our positive intent, despite the knowledge that the pitch would be slow. The side is very different from last year and with the fact that we are in a higher league, it was going to be very interesting to see how the game developed.
Gary and Doug resumed their blossoming partnership at the top of the order. It was tough going with the slow pitch proving that timing the ball was a challenge. Also, the outfield was turning fours into two’s. Gary and Doug made a steady start putting on 30 from 12 overs, before Gary was caught by the keeper off a bottom edge for 10.
Krishan joined Doug in the middle and they put on 13, when Doug smashed a backfoot drive straight to mid-on and departed for a hard fought 12. Debutant Manny Ferreira strode purposefully out to the middle at number four. Krishan was showing his class with some majestic stroke play and Manny was looking dangerous with his aggressive intent. The pair put on 61 in 8 overs to build a fantastic platform from which to push on from in the second part of the innings. Manny was undone by the slow off spin of Renda, when he came down the track and was caught in two minds and ended up getting bowled for 12.
Next man in was the mercurial Qaiser. He immediately set about the bowling and with Krishan releasing the shackles it was show time! The boundaries were coming thick and fast with sixes sailing high and fours thundering past the fielders. Qaiser scored 26 from 16 balls with an astonishing strike rate of 162.5, when he was caught in the deep attempting another six. We were 135 off 28 overs when DFS went out to bat.
Krishan continued his masterclass and reached his 50 with a straight drive for 4. Unfortunately, his innings came to a premature demise when he was run out for 57, which included five fours and two sixes. Bergy came to the crease with 7 overs remaining with the target of 200 well on course. DFS was bowled for a solid 19 coming down the track trying to launch a boundary off the left-hand seamer Hall. Bergy soon followed for 12, when he was stumped by Colmer coming down the track to Renda in the 36th over.
We still needed 20 from the last 4 overs with another debutant Mohit joining Tom at the crease. Tom was scampering around furiously as ever and Mohit looked very organized. Mohit got off the mark with a good looking cover drive for two and soon followed it up with a wonderful glance for six over third man from an illegal beamer. He leant back Trescothickesque and guided it over the boundary for the champagne moment of the match.
Mohit was the next man out for 12 with the score on 195 and his brother Romit, another debutant took up the reins to try and secure maximum batting points with 2 overs remaining. Romit and Tom made easy work of it and when Romit was run out for 10 we had raced onto 219 with one ball remaining. We closed our innings on a brilliant 222, which was worth at least 50 more runs on a slow pitch and a heavy outfield.
Qaiser and Romit opened our bowling attack in devastating fashion. Qaiser was fast and hostile. None more so than when he struck Jeffs on the toe with a vicious inswinging Yorker. Jeffs bravely carried on batting with blood seeping through his boot and his face twisted in anguished gut churning pain. You could hear his groans of discomfort coming from behind his gritted teeth, as he steeled himself to face another ferocious delivery from Qaiser.
Romit was unplayable with his swing and accuracy from the other end. Romit struck first in the fourth over when he bowled Colmer for 8. Old Netley held out for another 4 overs, before Romit took the heart out of their top order. First, he put Jeffs out of his misery when he pinned him lbw with a grubber and then he rattled the timber again when he bowled Lowe the very next ball. With the field in close enough to smell the tea on the new batsman’s breath, Romit came steaming in focusing on a hat-trick on debut. The batsman survived, but not without suffering a nasty full bunger straight on the hand. This time it was the turn of Westrope, Old Netley’s skipper, to grit his teeth in pain.
Qaiser finally got the wicket that his superb bowling deserved in the 15th over. He produced the ball of the day when he ripped through Flew’s defence with an unplayable delivery. It was a fast and full delivery that swung in the air before jagging sharply back off the pitch and smashing into the top of leg stump. Old Netley were on the ropes at 26 for 4 off 13 overs.
Romit bowled through his allotted quota and finished with the sensational figures of 8 overs 3 maidens 6 runs for 3 wickets. There was no respite for the opposition batsmen as they faced a new challenge with the change bowlers. Mani Noor-Spencer replaced Qaiser at the Creek End with his off spin and Mohit came on at the Kendall End with his leg breaks. Mohit struck in the last over before drinks when he bowled Westrope for a painfully slow 4 from 42 deliveries. At drinks Old Netley’s batting was in tatters at 41 for 5.
Hadley and Scragg showed great skill to dig in for the next 16 overs and put on a stand of 71. With four overs remaining it was looking unlikely that we would bowl the opposition out and claim the 24 points that the performance deserved. However, Mani Noor-Spencer had other ideas and with his first over at the Kendall End he bowled Hadley with a jaffer to prize the door open to the lower order. Hadley departed for a fine 48. The door was hanging off it hinges when Mani produced another ragging delivery that clean bowled the bemused Hall for a golden duck. It was Mani’s turn to be on hat-trick and once again the field closed in around the new batsman. Mani fizzed another beautifully flighted delivery down on a perfect length which beat Paramore all ends up, but missed the stumps by millimetres. With four overs remaining Old Netley were 117 -7.
Manny Ferriera was bustling in from the Creek End and was generating some real heat on the ball. He was giving everything to try and get the remaining wickets. He broke through in the 37th over when he bowled Randa for a duck and we had a real chance now of claiming all 10 wickets. That increased when Noor-Spencer was too good for the obstinate Scragg clean bowling him for 28. He was producing a magic spell of bowling and he had taken 3 wickets in 10 balls. However, Old Netley managed to survive the last 2 overs to deny us all 24 points, but it didn’t prevent us from crushing them by 89 runs in a dominant display where we were stronger in every department.
I am delighted with the performance of our new looking side and everyone played their part in a dominant team performance. Next up is a home game against Wickham and it’s another opportunity for us to get another big win under our belts. Well played lads. Up the Mighty 3rd’s! Bring it on!!
