DON’S DESTROYED BY POWERFUL P&S III

P&S lost the toss and were put in on a pudding of a pitch. It was so green it was barely discernible from the square and the Don’s skipper struggled to keep the smile off his face. That grew even wider when Sathish was out in the second over and we were 0-1.

Bibek went in at his new position of number three and excelled in a brilliant partnership with Karthik Madavan. They played beautifully on a dreadfully slow track against some very testing and accurate bowling. They put on a classy 67 off 16 overs, before Bibek mistimed a drive, which held up on the pitch for an impressive 25.

Dinesh came and went without troubling the scorers and was replaced by the Skipper just before drinks. Bergy and Khartik Madavan put on 60 in 11 overs and the partnership was looking very ominous for the Don’s, until Khartik was stumped for a sublime 76.

Hambledon’s hopes of slowing down the run rate were dashed, when Khartik Muthuraman instantly set about the home sides attack. Our talisman immediately targeted the short boundary on the leg side and was aided by the Don’s skipper bowling his left arm dobbers around the wicket. The ball was soon flying into and over the short boundary in regular fashion. One powerful pull shot from Khartik sent the ball crashing into The Bat and Ball’s patio area.

Norman decided to remove himself from the carnage after his last two overs went for 31 runs. Bergy and Karthik were on the rampage and they put on 73 runs in 8 overs, until it was ended when Khartik departed for a blistering 42. P&S had raced to 212-5 in the 39th over.

Qaisir played a couple of flamboyant shots, before he was bowled targeting the short boundary. Doug chipped in with 6 not out from his brief cameo and the Skipper finished on 54 not out. We closed our innings on 230-6. As well as a pudding for a pitch, the batsman didn’t get much value for their shots from the spongy outfield. It was a tremendous effort to reach our total and it was the most complete batting performance of the season.

Khartik opened the bowling in sensational fashion with a wicket with the first delivery of the innings. Then with his fourth ball he removed the next batsman with a jaffer. He drew Wingham forward and shaped the ball away to get an edge behind to Khartik Madavan, who took a comfortable catch with the gloves. Hambledon had made a disastrous start and were 0-2 off the first over.

Khartik was on fire and struck again in his next over with the ball of the match. Rogers played inside the line on an impeccable length and was bowled when the ball swung late to clip the top of off stump. Sensational! Queue total bedlam as we danced with joy in front of the on looking Don’s players who looked completely shell shocked. Khartik had reduced Hambledon to 10-3 in the third over.

The incredible effort that Khartik was putting in trying to extract any life out of the docile pitch was taking its toll on him, especially after his earlier exploits with the bat and it was no surprised when

he signalled to the Skipper for a break. At the other end Aga was taking the attack to Qaisir and he was playing some glorious cover drives to the boundary.

The Skipper decided to take some pace off the ball and Sam repaid him when he took a wicket with his very first delivery. Sam flighted a beautiful delivery on a perfect length that turned and bowled the dangerous Aga through the gate. Hambledon were staring down the barrel at 46-4 from 10 overs. Sam struck again in his fifth over, this time he undid the attacking Penay; bowling him with his quicker ball.

Doug replaced Pete at the pavilion end and when he claimed the wicket of Mullins in his first over, with Sathish taking a well- judged catch at deep mid- wicket, a quick finish looked to be a certainty. However, Berry and Shinn dug in and it became a war of attrition. They hung around for 19 overs, until the Skipper introduced himself in the 41st over to bowl an over of off spin. Bergy got one to bite outside off stump and to spit onto the glove of the defiant Shinn, to present Khartik Madavan with a simple catch.

Hambledon closed on 150-7 from their 42 overs and we won the match by a massive 80 runs. It was a scintillating performance by us which was full of belief, expectation and energy. We were too strong for Hambledon in every department and we swept them aside to collect a massive 22 points. It was our best and most complete performance of the season and we have put ourselves right in the promotion mix.

Now we move onto our next match against Sarisbury 4th’s and we need to focus on continuing to improve our game. It is time for us to become relentless in our pursuit of promotion. Bring on Saturday! Up The Mighty 3rd’!
