Match report
A difficult day to end the league season on with a much changed and very young side, against a team flying high and already promoted. We did at least win the toss, and opted to field to ensure that everyone was able to contribute. It was hard work, a hot afternoon chasing leather as Kerala didn't waste anytime in attacking the short boundaries. Fielding with only 10 made things harder, and with the loose shots always seeming to land in gaps it was a struggle to keep a lid on things. Credit to the 7 bowlers used who all gave their all, and a special mention to young Joel who regularly caused the batsman problems and deservedly picked up two wickets. In the end 353-5 could have been a lot worse.
Needing to score at just over 8 an over for 45 overs we probably needed to start better than we did, and at 17-6 there was cause for concern as the run rate had hit nearly 10. However inspired captaincy saw Dan promoted up the order to 9 and after overcoming vertigo he along with Ben rallied, and we were finally all out for 54 and crucially avoided a 300 run defeat.
A big thank you to Joel, Tristan N, Tristan C and Mo for stepping up in a week when so many others could not be available. You did yourselves proud, and I hope it won't be long before you are all regulars at this level, you all have the ability to progress rapidly. I do hope that this foray into the 2XI hasn't put you off! Also thanks to Neil for devotion beyond the call of duty to get to the game after tea.
Congratulations to the 1XI and 3XI on their promotion. Today's game shouldn't overshadow what has been a season of good progress for the 2nds and I hope that next season they be pushing for promotion themselves next season.
