New Milton II v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 20 May 2017 at 1.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Rain prevented a 1pm start to this match and reduced it to a 47 over contest. This had no real bearing on the outcome.
Matt's opening spell lasted one over as the injury from the previous week prevented him from bowling in comfort. Chris immediately took over and bowled economically. It was Jake who made the breakthrough, again bowling his 10 over quota without interruption and reducing the home side to 31 for 3 after 12 overs.
Wickets fell steadily throughout the New Milton innings. In fact, the highest partnership was only 15. Raff Hussey tried to take the game to the visitors and was top scorer, but 97 was an inadequate total even on a slightly rain-affected pitch which was taking spin.
Jack and Steve began cautiously after their travails of the previous match and during their opening partnership of 24 in 9 overs, Wakefield, the home team's only spinner, went to hospital having split the webbing on his hand, attempting a catch.
Staniford dismissed Clem and bowled steadily throughout his spell, but from the 12th over onwards, his partners were treated roughly by Jack. His 50 came up from 68 balls in exactly one hour but he was out with just 3 needed. Only one more ball was bowled.
Surely, P & S will be more hard-pressed in future matches.
