Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Rowledge II on Sat 13 May 2017 at 1.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
What an exciting game this was despite the fact that at tea, a home win by plenty of wickets looked a formality.
Both Matt and Jake found lots of movement but very little luck in the Spring sunshine. The breakthrough didn't arrive until the 13th over (32-1). Chris took the second in the 21st over (52-2) to set up three overs of carnage from Jono in which he dismissed 4 for 6 bowling over the wicket. Keiron took the seventh with his second delivery but the home side were held up by the biggest partnership of the innings as Martin and Watson added 32 in 12 overs. The spinners took the last three for a meagre 3 runs to leave the home side needing just over two runs per over to win.
Nobody was expecting what happened next as Swan and Taylor reduced P & S to 41 for 6 in the opening 11 overs. I think it's fair to say that not all of the wicket-taking deliveries were particularly good ones.
Everyone knew that Rowledge had to bowl P & S out to win the game as 63 were needed from 39 overs so no pressure from that direction, but the key was not losing wickets. Tom and Jake achieved this with composure and almost faultless judgement. They also played some lovely shots - always off the right deliveries.
The match ended with 25 and a half overs to spare and Rowledge left with a paltry 4 points when perhaps they deserved more.
