Match report PORTSOUTH AND SOUTHSEA III V BEDHAMPTON

MATCH REPORT by Leon Tolstoy

Bedhampton won the toss and put us in on a damp strip, due to a heavy shower on the morning of the match. We opened with Simon and DFS on a slow pitch, which tested their patience and shot selection. They put on an excellent stand of 74 from the first 14 overs, before DFS was given out LBW for a measured 33.

Bangers was extremely unfortunate to pull a full toss straight to deep backward square leg for a golden duck. That brought the Skipper to the wicket and he shared a fantastic partnership of 96 from 17 overs with Simon. It was broken when Simon was caught by the wicket keeper attempting a late cut. Simon made a well crafted 64 and once again proved how valuable he is to our team. It was no coincidence that it was our best batting display for the past three games, all of which Simon had been absent.

Neil came in at five and showed the versatility of his batting, depending on the match situation. He looked to attack immediately and recorded our first six of the innings with a pull shot over square leg. The Skipper was bowled for 76 in the 38th over and he was replaced by Ollie, who played some glorious shots for his 14 not out from just 17 deliveries. Neil departed for a rapid 22 in the 41st over and Karthik smashed a six over mid-wicket to close our innings on 237 for 5. It was an impressive total, which was set up brilliantly by Simon and DFS.

Our attack was depleted by several missing players and especially the potency of Connor. We opened with Karthik and Sam. They did well to keep the batsman quiet and in the 11th over Sam struck with an audacious piece of bowling. It is a rarity for an off spin bowler to have the ability to be able to bowl a leg break at will, but Sam has that skill. He drew the batsman down the wicket with his flight and then bamboozled him with the leggie, which bowled him off his pads.

With the dark clouds gathering ominously above, the Skipper decided to bring himself on, so that we could get 20 overs and thus constitute a game. The Skipper struck in his first over with a ball that spun and clipped the top of off stump. In the 19th over the Skipper got his 2nd wicket, when John Hovey was unfortunately given out LBW. At the time the Skipper was convinced, but Tom Collet and several other players thought it was sliding down leg.

Then in the 21st over Bedhampton lost their Skipper for 48. He was undone by a smart piece of fielding from “Hollywood” DFS. He casually stopped a drive that appeared to have passed him and then nonchantly threw the ball to Tom to whip off the bails, with Rowe frantically trying to make his way back to his crease, culminating with a desperate dive.

At drinks Bedhampton were 76-4. Ramesh replaced Sam who had bowled his full 10 overs and Karthik replaced the Skipper. By the time Karthik had finished his spell in the 31st over, the game was but won. Bedhampton were 97-8 and Karthik had picked up 2 wickets, both with catches. The first to Ollie at square leg and the second to DFS at cover.

Ramesh had also claimed two wickets bowling intandem with Karthik. The first at thick edge that spun awkwardly to Neil at backward point and the second with the ball of the day. It was a quick delivery that jagged back viciously and crashed into middle stump. Unplayable. Ramesh picked up his third wicket in the 34th over with a catch taken by Sam at mid-on. Ramesh was the pick of the bowlers and finished with splendid figures of 3-18 from 7 overs.

After a lot of wild windmilling of arms and hopeful glances towards the Skipper, DFS finally got his moment to have a bowl. He did not disappoint, by promptly bowling the number 11 with his second delivery, to end the match. Bedhampton were all out for 116.

It was another outstanding display by us and we need to take this form into our remaining fixtures. If we can do that, then I am confident we achieve our objective of getting promotion. Great performance lads and keep going.
