Match report
Made it! Many congrats to all who contributed to our table topping season. A seasons review will be published when I feel the urge.
After a pretty poor display against US last week we were hoping for a more relaxed outing this week. It all started so well - another lost toss and again we were asked to bowl which was our preference. Our bowling and fielding held up really well. Spain bound Deano chose his swan-song to produce his season's best figures while BMW and the Big Mac bowled really tightly to keep the pressure on. While all had their moments, ball of the day was produced by Pete Tanner who ripped out their no4 with one that pitched middle & leg and hit the top of off at pace. Over of the day however goes to Wasp Wilson who had their top scorer playing and missing the first 4 balls, digging out a quick yorker ball 5 and then miss timing a yahoo back to the bowler to complete a tremendous wicket maiden. While we didn't get all the bowling points on offer 8 down for 150 on a decent track was a good afternoons work.
Then the fun started......Dan was undone by a low one he played on - and given a deserving send off! - OJ flashed at one too many, the skipper was somewhat disappointed by an LBW shout and Andy H was yorked first up - carnage. 35 for 5. Knowing we needed at least 8 points (a score of 125) to guarantee promotion the Smith connection dug in. A crucial 10 over partnership of 30 helped steady things a bit but things still looked rocky when Smith Snr perished for an invaluable 33. Both Pete T and Deano looked comfortable for short periods but both perished before we had 100 on the board. By this time the somewhat wound up skipper had lapped the ground 60 times and was contemplating the "well done but it wasn't to be" speech. But never fear Big Mac was here.
With a sensible mix of caution, aggression and positive running Hero Smith and Al inched us closer to first promotion, then victory. I have never seen Matty Smith bat better and if he can show as much maturity and resolve as he did here he will grace the first team for many years to come. Shot of the day of course goes to him for a hugh six off their captain - no mean bowler. I felt that with that stoke we'd make it although there were still 40 runs required.
When, with 2 balls remaining, the final runs was scampered we had capped a really great season with the grittiest and tightest win of the year. Despite DW's 5-fa Matt Smith was undoubtedly man of the match having played the most significant innings of the entire summer.
