Match report Our strength in depth was evident again tonight as whilst we had Harry G and John B unavailable, we were able to welcome back Harry W and Harry H for their first game of the season. Unfortunately we lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, which on a small pitch was probably going to prevent us from being able to ensure that everybody got to bat and bowl.
Portsmouths openers were initially careful against our strong opening attack of Harry H and Harlan, and Portsmouth only had 39 runs on the board at the end of that 8 over spell. Dan C and Dan T kept it tight but we couldnt find an opening, meaning that both Portsmouth openers retired not out. Harry W made the breakthrough with an lbw against their No 4. Dan Cox took a wicket with the help of a catch by Sonny and a couple of run outs claimed another two. Portsmouths No 3 played an effective but not quite text book innings and contributed a valuable 35 runs which pushed the total along. Harry W claimed another wicket in the final over. Portsmouth finished on 121 for 5 off their 20 overs.
In reply Portsmouth's main man bowled an excellent two overs and managed to prise out Ollie with a caught behind. Harry Wr and Harry H both then batted excellently, initially respectful when needed, but then they both started to regularly and ruthlessly find the boundary with some impressive power. Both retired with a big 6. Joe and Harlan kept things moving before Joe lofted a catch and perished for 11. In a last throw of the dice Portsmouth brought back their main bowler which Harlan greeted with a 6 of his own, before he and Dan C saw us home with 7.1 overs to spare.
Even though it was early season this was a top of the table clash and an important game to win. As mentioned previously batting second and the desire to win a top of the table clash meant that we weren't able to give enough cricket to some of the team tonight. This is noted and we will try to balance things up when match situations allow. Well played boys.
