Match report Another Sunday and another difficult day.
Being asked to bat Harry H and Ollie went out to face the music. With the pitch being decidedly temperamental their tall opening bowler had the ball one minute around the batters ears and then scuttling along the deck. One such non-bouncing ball finished Harry's fluent knock after Ollie had played on. It's good to welcome George W on board but he got a good ball first up and Harry DM and Harlan were left to rebuild. This they did to good effect with both finding the boundary off appropriate balls. Harry, a man in form, followed his mid week 26 with an exact replica before being caught going over the top pushing things on. Harlan having played very straight before hand tried to hit across the line and paid the price. Daniel ran well and hit cleanly but he too tried to hit to leg off a straight one. The tail then got in a muddle. Will was unlucky to be run out by a direct hit but it illustrated how running hard rather than trying to watch the ball over a shoulder can cost you dear - a lesson many of us can learn from! Henry went hitting straight (which is good but more elevation needed) and Kyle and George were undone by balls off their pads. A bit of a collapse - we were 72 for 3 in the 13th and 86 all out in the 18th.
In field we needed to take wickets but alas they never came. Harry H charged down the hill but the uneven bounce made it difficult for Will behind the stumps. While Harry and fellow opening bowler Harlan kept a lid on things and created the odd chance, a nick behind that just didn't carry and a C&B that did the same the wickets never came. What would have been catch of the day saw George W take to the air (horizontal) at square leg to just get a finger on a middled pull from their opener a stunning effort but again no luck. The change bowlers bowled tight too. Both Georges (W & DM) kept good lines and lengths but couldn't find away through. By now our fielding was really starting to flag in the heat and our remaining bowlers found it tricky bowling to the right hand, left hand combination. The end came pretty quickly once their opener had retired for a well made 30 as their number three bashed 3 4's (not before offering a final grassed chance off the unlucky Henry).
While it was hot today, with the exception of Henry and Kyle who stopped everything that came their way, we let a few too many passed us. We have to remember the simple things, get something behind the ball, long barrier, foot, two hands etc. Remembering to walk in will keep us on our toes more and backing up throws would allow us to attack the stumps more and stay interested in the game. Next time troops....
