Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 11A v Waterlooville on Wed 23 May 2012 at 6pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report A really exciting finish to a game that ebbed and flowed before some lusty blows settled things in favour of the visitors.
Batting first we came out of the blocks really quickly with 19 runs on the board after 2 overs with Ollie peppering the cover boundary. Ollie's run out slowed things a bit (lesson - think hard before running overthrows particularly if you've run past the stumps for the 1st run). The introduction of a tidy off-spinner saw Fin well stumped and Daniel C bowled just as he was cutting loose, having built his innings well. Despite some imputus provided by Harry, Oscar and George found scoring tough. Despite that they defended resolutely and aided by the extras took our score on. When Oscar was bowled by their returning quicky Daniel T was unlucky to get a good one first up going for quick runs before we closed 5 down for 88.
In defence we opened up with Fin and Henry who’s 2 over bursts contained plenty of dots to give us an early advantage. Some super ground fielding early on from Peter and Amir helped provide support. More tight stuff from Harry kept the pressure on well. Russell, in his first A team match, had a difficult first over only to come back really well with a great second and was never less than excellent in the field. The game really swung in our favour though with the introduction of Daniel C. His flighted offspin and great hands for a return catch saw him the pick all the bowlers on display with 3 for 4 in his 3 overs. Maidens from Dan C, Dan T (who’s excellent overs only went for 2 runs) and George got us into the box seat but a flurry of extras and much better running from the visitors saw them left with 9 required off the last over. Peter bravely stepped up for his first over of the match. Unfortuantely for us despite his straight wicket bound bowling their bat chanced his arm well and connected three times through the leg side to secure the win for Waterlooville.

What can we learn?
With a little more urgency in our batting, both in shot making and running, we might have posted a stiffer target. As we saw today even an extra 4 or 5 runs for us could have been enough. Also we perhaps asked a little too much of our more inexperienced bowlers in asking them to bowl in the closing overs when a change in the bowling order might well have seen us through.
Nevertheless, well played everyone in an enjoyable match.
