Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 15B v Hambledon on Fri 01 Jul 2011 at 6pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Winning the toss, Captain Harrison Whitworth elected to bat first to make the most of the good light and capitalise on the visitor’s missing players. Opening the innings, Charlie Corbett and Tom Lavery made a confident start and were quick to find the gaps through to the boundary. Unfortunately Tom was bowled trying to hit out over the inner ring of fielders. His lowly score does not reflect his effort or quality of his cricket shots. In at number 3, Pat Sillence played some classic cricket shots and with quick running between the wickets, he and Charlie kept up a decent run rate, until Charlie was caught at Mid Off going for another boundary. Harrison Whitworth joined Pat to accelerate the run rate further with plenty of nicks through the gaps quick running between the wickets putting on a spirit raising partnership of 48 runs. Harrison displaying a true captain’s innings to knock up a creditable innings of 30 runs. With 81 runs on the scoreboard at the end of the 10th over, a change of bowling pace by the visiting bowlers, opting for spin was the catalyst for a spectacular middle and lower order batting collapse. First to go – Harrison, top edge going for a lofty hook shot, next ball - Pat, tucked up without enough space to swing was bowled, Ezra Hind managed to avoid the hat-trick, but was bowled next ball. Ben Jackson could not stop the rot and was back in the pavilion after facing one ball. In one over, the loss of 4 wickets was a mighty blow to the team’s confidence and although Ben Saunders, Charlie Cupples, Jez Pidgeon, Tom Millet and James Boss offered some resistance, it was all too little, too late.
Charlie Cupples and Ben Jackson opened the bowling, Ben making an early breakthrough dismissing the wickets of Dyer and Prentice cheaply. Charlie was rewarded for his very accurate bowling with the removal of the Hambledon No 1 bat, however it was not before Lewis had managed to smash a quick-fire 35. Ben was replaced by Charlie Corbett, who bowled with Trueman-esque pace and accuracy from the Hospital End, however the damage had been done and the remaining Hambledon batsmen had managed to hit the winning runs before the end of the 13th over.
Without doubt, a well deserved victory to Hambledon, but most pleasing from a Manager’s perspective was the fight the lads displayed both at the crease and in the field. It was clear every member tried their best, which unfortunately was just not enough to earn them a victory.
Keep working together and you will get your just rewards.
