Match report Match Report – P & S v Portsmouth Thu 21 May 09

Under a bright summer evening sky, P&S opened the batting led by Captain Sam Collings-Wells and Seb Herold against a particularly fast and accurate spell of bowling from the visitors. Unfortunately, just as he was starting to get in, Seb was run out for 4 runs. Joined by Tom Lavery batting at No 3, the two knuckled down to build a decent innings, until Tom was bowled by a wicked in-swinging Yorker. Batting lower down the order than usual, Ed Coulson entered the fray to partner Sam until the Captain departed with a respectable 23 score. Next in Harrison Whitworth who, together with Ed and some excellent running between wickets managed to keep the score ticking over. Dismissed by some clever varied bowling Ed was relieved by Charlie Corbett who settled in quickly and continued knocking the ball into the gaps. The runs continued to roll on until both batsmen were out caught in quick succession. The remaining batsmen, Matt Walker, Pat Sillence, Ben Jackson and Joe Revell-Smith tried hard to make the most of the remaining overs, hitting out, managing to add 5 valuable runs at the tail.

The P&S fielding and bowling efforts were undone by some particularly hard hitting by the visiting top order batsmen. All the bowlers kept a decent line and length attempting to keep the score a manageable level, but the Portsmouth batsmen were just too good. Joe Hawkins was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-0-8-2. Unfortunately the bowlers were not well supported in the field, there were too many dropped catches which cost them dearly as two of the batsmen, H Farrant and J Marston retired on 32 and 30 runs respectively, allowing the visitors a comfortable victory.

As disappointing as this derby match turned out, there is a valuable lesson for the lads to remember – Believe you will win, before and at all times during the match.
